“They don’t go out of their way to seek good publicity. They are happy to stay in the background, like (Roman) Abramovich at Chelsea.

Wenger: We want £30m for Van Persie! United bid is under threat as City rejoin chase for striker

Manchester United’s move to sign Robin van Persie is hanging in the balance because Arsenal  are refusing to budge on their £30 million valuation of the Dutch striker.
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger’s determination to extract the maximum fee for the player could re-open the door for champions Manchester City to push their interest in the player.

Wenger said: ‘Van Persie is one of the best strikers in the world, if not the best, and my desire is to keep him at the club. I will do what is in the best interests of Arsenal Football Club.’
In demand: Robin van Persie has stated his desire to leave Arsenal - but the club are holding out for £30m

United had been confident they would eventually sign the striker, who they believe is keen on a move to Old Trafford, with a compromise deal of £20m likely. But Arsenal’s stance has stalled negotiations, leaving City the most likely destination, with Juventus  also put off by the London club’s demands.

City want to sell either Edin Dzeko or Carlos Tevez before committing to a big deal for Van Persie. But they will need to act swiftly to take advantage of Arsenal’s impasse with United and mollify manager Roberto Mancini.

Mancini is understood to be incensed that City have not done more than join United and Juventus in making a modest opening offer for the Dutchman. He wanted a clear signal from club to player that City value Van Persie more highly than their rivals and will do anything to secure his services.
Call for action: Roberto Mancini wants City to increase their interest in Van Persie

The City boss has grown frustrated at what he sees as a lack of decisive activity in the transfer market and has demanded that the club are not beaten to Van Persie’s signature by bitter rivals United.

How long the impasse with United lasts depends on Arsenal. Sir Alex Ferguson and the United board value the Holland striker at £15m and have refused to be drawn into a bidding war.

Their valuation is based on Van Persie’s age — he will be 29 on August 6 — and the fact that he is in the final year of his contract at Arsenal. His desire to leave was also made clear in a statement announcing his refusal to sign a new deal and criticising the club’s direction.

One of the boys? Will Robin van Persie be joining new summer arrivals Shinji Kagawa (fourth left) and Nick Powell (right) at Old Trafford?

Wenger has left him out of the club’s pre-season tour to Asia but hinted again that he would be prepared to keep Van Persie until his contract ends next year if the right deal was not struck.

If the transfers happen, they happen,’ said Wenger.  ‘As long as you are at the club you give your best for the club and that is the only pride you can have as a football player and as a manager.

‘As long as you are somewhere you give your best every day for that club. If it changes, it changes.

Success story: Van Persie netted 37 goals in 48 games last season

‘I am convinced that Robin is like that, he is completely focused every day on his job. He loves football, he loves the game and as long as he is here he will do that.’

The Arsenal board would prefer to close the deal and move on but have deferred to Wenger, who was unhappy with the club’s dealings in last summer’s window

i mean, come the fuck on! 30 million for a player in the last year of his contract who wants to leave. arsenal are stupid fecks

True but they did get £24,000,000 for Samir Nasri who was in a similar position to RvP.

I dont know why Mancini wants him....we already have 4 top class striker and one very promising one in Guidetti,,,I think Balotelli will reach Van Persie's level in couple of years so why not invest in him.....

Guidetti promising yes, anything special, no. Slow and limited and will be sold and rightly so. He's not that much younger than Mario and not fit to lace his boots. We need a 5th striker.
