Our family home is about half-way between the city centre and Rochdale, so when I was finally old enough to be let loose on the Saturday buses, but not yet ready for 'town', I headed to Rochdale. Drake Street had loads of independent shops selling real quality goods - furniture, china, watches, even pianos. I used to love the old department store, just down from the Rochdale Observer offices, with its split-level floors and lifts with concertina grating that meant you could see the cabling and look up and down the lift shaft. I suppose the death knell came with the out-of-town shopping warehouses, plus cheap imports from abroad.
Then there's the heritage. Pioneer Street, with the original Co-op (and a decent pub nearby, if I remember right), the parish church at the top of all those shallow steps (I never managed to get the same tally), and one of the most stunning town halls in Britain. If you think Manchester Town Hall is a fine example, take a tour round Rochdale's. For me, it wins hands down.
