Romeo Lavia

What is going on is we are giving our talented youngsters the chance to play at Premier League level in a team where they will have a better chance of getting a large number games under their belt, compared to the handful they would get if they stay and compete against the world class players we have. They will progress way more playing week in week out in the Premier League rather than getting 10-15 minutes off the bench here and there and the odd cup game against league 2 opposition. In addition the buying club are more likely to develop them than if they are just a 12m loan player.

In doing that we are also getting tens of millions of pounds and the option that we can buy them back if they progress (in top level English football rather than second tier European leagues) like they have the potential of doing. Also we are showing that kids in our academy come out at either our team (Foden, Palmer, McAtee) or if not they can get to the top level in Germany or the Premier League.

This site used to have a contributor (Neville Neville) who constantly said that the kids need playing time at the top level - Brandon Barker was one name he used who was on fire in the reserves but never got the chance at the right time and ended up fizzling out.

Honestly i can not see the down side in these moves, i think they are brilliant and get around the UK loan moves restrictions.

At least we are shrewd enough to put buy back clauses in the contract so I guess that covers our back if they turn out good. £10m seems very cheap in todays market mind.

Not just the youngsters though - Raz, Gabby, Ake, Zinny - how many players are we actually moving on this year? Whilst none are first teamers, I am concerned we could be running short on players and we don't want a scenario like at the end of last year.

Disappointed we are letting him go. Always thought he was talented and could easily turn out better than Kalvin Phillips with a couple of years development behind him. Hopefully we have put in a cheap buy back clause. Great signing for Southampton.

Not sure what's going on at City, we seem intent on selling player after player this summer
He could indeed turn out better than Phillips with a couple of years development behind him, that's why we've got a buy-back (and probably a sell-on) deal with Southampton. Where do you think this development is going to take place otherwise? Unless you want us to drop standards and possibly fall back into the chasing pack and out of the CL?

£10million for a player who hasn't got a single minute for the 1st team (or very little if so, couldn't be arsed checking TBH)? Plus we have a buy-back and presumably sell-on clause.

Since when were Raz, Gabby, Ake & Zinny not first teamers? Not that a single one of them have actually left yet although Gabby seems all but done. Meanwhile we've definitely signed Haaland and Alvarez is joining us for pre-season.

Agreed, if they are top talents at a young age (Foden) they break in to the first team. If not they get sold and hopefully establish themselves at a premier division side and may become a top player/established. With buy back clauses in place its the best possible solution available for all concerned.

Of course they are first teamers

Great post that.

Okay. Well made points but Lavia could have had more minutes this season just gone and who knows?

It's a sensible move for all involved.

These academy players, at 18 or 19, are very rarely up to playing more than a very occasional role in our first team.

In 5 years, with the right experience, they could be world-beaters. But they're not going to get the experience here.

Sentimentally it does make me a little sad to see some of these players leaving without getting a chance.

But better Lavia goes and plays PL football and learns and improves, than he sits on our bench just waiting.

10 million is probably cheap for a reason, it will mean a lower buyback option. The higher the fee the higher the buyback. No club will put the effort in unless the buyback is at least 10 million profit.
