Romeo Lavia

KdB and Salah were bought in as relatively expensive young players to the first team squad
and not given a chance.

I feel a better comparison would be Ake who had some youth development at Chelsea bit went elsewhere to develop.

I suspect this will happen a bit as we can't always develop players. If he had stayed instead of Phillips getting Phillips game time wouldn't have been much use. He probably needed time at Southampton.
needed time - one season?

He hasn't developed that much off the back of one season, a season he was injured in as well, 29 games.

He could have played at least 20 for us in the role that we bought Phillips to play and then again this season and then we would still have a player that would have been termed homegrown at that point and saved 50m on Phillips and had a guy that could give Rodri a chance to rest.

They don't get much wrong but getting rid of Lavia has been one of them, as was the 2nd year buy back clause, that has bit us on the arse as well.

I can't believe I missed Chlesea buying another BHA player in Sanchez lol fucking hell, might as well have kept Potter and bought the entire BHA team 18 months ago for half the price they paid now.

29 games is a lot of football.
If he'd have got the game time that Phillips got he'd have got 2 dead rubber PL fixtures and a scattering of minor cup matches.
Getting Phillips looks like a mistake, it doesn't mean Lavia should have been his replacement last season.

Why did Phillips only get that time?

If he was competent or fit he would have played in and around 20 games with cup games included, so Lavia if he had stayed would have had that and been 9 games shy of his current Soton total but with the added benefit of training with our squad and Pep everyday.

It was a big mistake to buy one and sell the other.

I said it before we bought Phillips as well.

We don't know how much game time he would have got but I suspect Pep would not have wanted someone with no experience in Rodri's position.
Pep was asked in an interview about Lavia and said he's a good player but we couldn't give him the minutes he needed.
At the moment his fee is half that of Caicedo's at a similar age, so I suspect the feeling is that he remains a work in progress

like I said they don't make many mistakes but they have with Lavia and Phillips.
Pep should have given him those minutes, he may as well as Phillips got none of them because he was deemed unfit and possibly not up to scratch, again you may say that it is easy to say in hindsight but I was saying this before we bought Phillips.

The fee size for Caicedo should never be counted, nor Lavia's tbh both nowhere near that value in all honesty, both players are still a work in progress, Caicedo is only one season into the PL he could be a flash in the pan or go onto be sublime, we will have to see.

I still dream of a day we are nearly all homegrown, so we can stick two fingers up at the wankers.

Hope so, I'd have loved it if Lavia had stayed and got the minutes, just a bit doubtful that it would have happened.
We both want the same thing though.

Agree totally. Lavia is a better player than Phillips but luckily we don’t make many mistakes with transfers. I think he will do well at Chelsea and be a first choice for them in a strong team.

Is that 2nd year buy back clause a usual thing for us.
Seems daft to me
I'd never heard it before tbh not even on one of our deals, it just seems very odd and with Southampton getting relegated it has cost us, if they'd stayed up I'd think Lavia would have stopped another season and then we were back in the game, if the player wanted to come back, of course?

Why would he want to come back to us, we clearly were not sure about him and if he came back he would spend most matchdays sat on his arse.

Added to the original 10m fee. It will be interesting to judge the overall merits of him and the deals after 1 or 2 seasons. He does look good when he plays, but we haven't really got many releases wrong unlike Chelsea!

14m we sold him for overall

Southampton have signed midfielder Romeo Lavia from Manchester City for a fee which could rise to £14m.

The deal is believed to be worth an initial £10.5m with a further £3.5m in add-ons and a 20% sell-on clause.

I read it as the 10.5 original (unlikely to have met many or any of the add ons) and the 20% sell on means another possibly 11m to add to the 10.5? so 21m approx?

wonder if this is our Salah-KDb moment where Chelsea sold them and not really building them into the team and came back to haunt them at rivals.

I dont think he is that great but hard to say with 19 y o players what is their ceiling. Looks expensive now, maybe in two seasons he will be regarded as brutally cheap.

Dont think he would have been far behind than Rico Lewis was when Pep started to give him game time last year. going for Phillips for 45m in hindsight is a strange decision, but lets see what Kalvin adds to City this season. good thing is he cannot really add less than last season.
I think the Phillips flop has certainly elevated fan opinions on how good Lavia would’ve been

Exactly, the one person we brought back, we gave a few games to then flogged him on again, hardly a great example.

Of course, we could be telling these lads we are really just loaning them out in a different fashion and they need the game time in a proper competitive environment (I might be reaching).

I have to say unless I was a real City fan I don't think I'd come back either tbh
