Sterling was playing wide of a front 3, Iheancaho would be far more suited to play centrally, however that's where Bony was playing, and where we intended on playing Aguero when he came on. If we'd have Bony and Iheanacho on the pitch together, then Aguero and Iheanacho later on, we'd have needed to adjust the formation, or else play someone in a position not best suited to them. Playing Iheanacho in an unfamiliar position could have done more harm than good to his confidence. Nasri was better suited to the position we needed to fill when Sterling was removed.
Sterling off, Kelechi on, Silva moved left and Kelechi behind Bony/Aguero. Would have made a slight change to the formation but at 3-0 there was no risk.

I'd have actually taken Silva off, he needs protecting, Sterling needs as much game time with his new teammates as possible.

That could have been an option, however we're now second guessing why Pellegrini brought off the players he did. Maybe Sterling was feeling fatigued? Toure looked like he had a slight niggle in his groin area, so perhaps replacing him with Demichelis wasn't part of the original plan? Maybe Iheanacho was earmarked to come on at some stage but circumstances forced a rethink? We're reading far too much into the simple fact that Iheanacho didn't get to come on late in yesterday's game. If that becomes a trend and, in a couple of months time, neither he nor Denayer have had any meaningful gametime then we can consider it, but not after just one match!

Read online that Lyon has signed Valbuena. Does that help our chances of hanging on to Lopes at all?

Yeah, he should more or less replace N'Jie (who's on his way to Spurs, and was rumoured to be vacating the place in the squad for Lopes), so Lyon probably won't be sniffing anymore. But as has been reported, there's many other clubs interested.

In lots of situations, no news is good news. But with only a year left on his contract, and the season already underway. No news is probably not good news. The longer this goes on, the less hopeful I'll be.

Should we sign de Bruyne, I cannot envisage both Nasri and Navas still being at the club in 12 months, so it would be short-sighted, for all parties, not to have some kind of understanding in place.

Totally agree with you we need Lopes to sign and then go on loan in my opinion. With Courtois Chelsea had a similar situation and refused to send on loan but a year treading water if he did not extend. I can't see that being our clubs way but we do need to sell him on a vision and get him to sign or have a year at looking at him in house to see if he can break in the team (probably unlikely at this point) in which case I am sure he would renew. A loan with no contract extension just puts him in the shop window for all club and probably means he's gone!!

I just hope we get him to sign an extension before loaning him, or include a small buy back in a sale.

They can't just loan him and let his contract expire, surely

Not upto us though is it ? If he won't sign, it doesn't really matter where he plays. Hopefully he'll sign a new deal but trom his point of view, unless he thinks City are going to use him, why sign ?

I'd sign with City and go on loan. Better the devil you know. He could end up dealing with devious club officials elsewhere. We are puppy dogs.
