Rony Lopes

The fact that Pellers doesn't seem to even know that we've sold him does seem to sum up his level of interest towards our young players so far.
I have to agree. I am not bothered about us selling Lopes. He didn't want to extend his contract, so we had no choice. I have come to terms with him moving on. But for Pellegrini to either not know, or not really care... well that's disappointing.

Indeed but the issue that nobody here is talking about is not so much losing Rekik, Lopes and Denayer which would be an incredible shame but not the end of the world. It's the fact that when the next 12 year old Messi is eventually discovered somewhere and every club is chasing him, his parents will look at our record and not see a club committed to bringing through young players and will see other clubs that offer all we do as well as this.

It isn't so much the problem of losing these players specifically, it's also the rather larger problem of being able to attract potentially world class young players into our Academy in the future.
Great point

Why did we promote him to the first team only to get rid of him a few weeks later?
Because they thought he was worth it ?

Sometimes an offer comes in that you can't refuse, and if he wasn't signing a new contract, maybe this was it ?

Its a shame because he's a good player, but he was still down the pecking order for a place in the team, its better for him that we let him go and play, and without the new contract signed he couldn't go on loan.

We paid 12m for Roberts and sold Lopes for 7.3m *facepalm*
£12m? That's a new one. I'd only heard £11m reported as the all in price with more knowledgable journalists saying £8-9m on the high end. We paid either £2m or £4m for Roberts initially.

In this case, we got £7.3m up front and there are surely additional clauses beyond that. Don't be the press and distort the facts to make us look worse.

If nothing else it finally gets rid of any doubts about mr anon the twitter bullshitter.

Best of luck to Lopes as well.

From what i've heard this morning from a good source (City legend and has a grandson in the academy) it's the Otamendi signing that has pushed this move. Sounds daft but there is a fair bit of ill feeling because of how Jason Denayer has been 'pushed out'. Think we have fucked up here personally

I predicted that would likely cause a problem before we signed him.

This is the key point.

If Ronaldo was in our youth ranks at 18 he wouldn't get into our team and would never have ended up as one of the greatest players ever. We're hurting their development and thus they aren't becoming good enough.

Agree and a point i made earlier about if we would of got Sterling instead of Liverpool he wouldn't be the player he is now because he wouldn't of played the amount of games he did at Liverpool! Just don't understand why city dont get this?

Kids will certainly think twice before extending their contracts with us. Looked for all the world that Denayer was going to be trusted to be 4th choice, possibly even overtaking Demichelis into 3rd choice, due to Martin being phased out. But then we bring in another big name. I just hope we didn't break any promises with Denayer. If he signed the new deal, having been informed he'd be part of the squad, then that certainly would prove to be a monumental fuck up. But we don't know what Denayer was promised, or indeed if he was promised anything at all.

Again, I'm not saying Vieira is particularly saying to Pellegrini that these kids are 'worth a punt'. I wouldn't say that myself. I am saying they 'deserve' to be given the opportunity to play some first team football, when the situation arises, not because they are 'worth a punt' but because they may become more than 'worth a punt' if they are given a chance to improve. I believe the coaches would let Pellegrini decide, but I don't believe for one second that they will be telling him not to.

And again the fact that 'We have world class professionals in nearly every position on the field, to break into the first City team, they will need to be something extra special, not just shining in the level they are currently operating at' is the very problem I'm talking about.

Kids aren't like that, they are just kids. Ronaldo used to get rags' fans moaning like fuck about him when he first appeared there, as his game was full of holes, he learned through playing for Utd. He wouldn't get a game at City at that age now, because he wouldn't have learned anything & therefore wouldn't get the chance to learn anything, because we have 'world class professionals' who will always, 100% of the time, be preferred, unles we are desperate.Gareth Bale wouldn't have played, Sterling wouldn't have played & would now be worth 10 mil rather than 50.

It's wrong imo. Badly wrong.
I appreciate we are all blues and want what's best for our club. I respect your viewpoint but we will just have to agree to disagree on this.

He had been assured he was 3rd choice behind Kompany and Mangala. Demichelis won't be here next season so won't have been factored into any plans. I think the club have lied to him. I just hope that if there is a fallout from this it's just Lopes that is the only one to force a move.

Not happy with this transfer, and will be royally pissed if he doesn't give Kelechi his City's debut against Watford as a substitute.

The 19-21 age period is the problem IMO. In Spain, Germany, Holland they have B teams at a professional level. Players like Busquets didn't even touch the Barca first team until they were out of their teens. It's very normal for teenagers to rarely play for elite level clubs (unless they are stupendously good), except the occasional novelty appearance. Like Lopes could have stayed and gotten 10, maybe 15 games, but that isn't enough. So what can we do except ask him to renew and loan him? Force him into the first team at the expense of a better player?

Force him into the first team at the expense of a better player?

Yes.

The fact is there is not a youth player at any top club in the world who was a better player than the person they replace when they made their debut. This is the singular realization that I wish the entire forum could come to. Even Lionel Messi who is an extreme talent the likes we might never see again at 17 was not better than Deco who was in front of him in the team. Every young player is a gamble, without exception.
