Can't we just buy some cheap home grown players, stick them in the squad, never play them and then spend our dosh on real foreign talent?

Or put our best prospects in the squad.

Or we can look towards a raft of young talent that is beating everybody at youth international level, to an under 21 side that can beat a formidable Germany team without eligible Premier League players such as Shaw, Jones, Barkley, Sterling, Dier, Berahino, Oxlade-Chamberlain and player of the season Harry Kane.
This is the problem with English football though. They think that results at youth level mean something and so play to win rather than to develop their players. In the past, we've done okay in these competitions by playing 11 athletes, who when they get to the men's game, can no longer dominate their opponents physically. I don't know if that's the case with the current team, but it doesn't necessarily mean any of the team will become greats.

Incidentally, Arsenal have done a good job of implementing a high tempo passing game with a decent number of English players in the squad. Although tellingly, all of their key players are still foreigners.

Just looking at the U21 wikipedia page, and not only do we have no players in the current England U21 team, but we don't even have any amongst the list of recent call-ups.

The only thing that is concerning is his injury record. You have to be shit hot to get straight back Into our team straight away, if Barkley was to get injured, the quality of the squad would ensure he wouldn't get a sniff of 1st team action for a long time. Kind of a Roswell situation.

The only thing that's stopped the English players being fundamental for Arsenal has been fitness. Walcott's goals/games ratio for a winger has been phenomenal in the past three season, he just couldn't stay fit. Oxlade-Chamberlain is another who always looks very useful when he manages to get onto the pitch. Wilshere proved against us at the Emirates that he can boss games at the very highest level, but is another who can't stay healthy. Chambers has been very good for them this season.

It's true that in the past England youth consisted of primarily athletic players, but this generation is different; the likes of John Stones, Will Hughes and Alex Pritchard are superb footballers who look capable of integrating into any great footballing team. The latter will be the next British talent to explode at Spurs next season after a superb loan at Brentford; his contact expires in 2016 and if we are looking to secure HG talent I'd do whatever possible to bring him up here next season. He's identical to Christian Eriksen in style and a free-kick specialist.

Barkley was apparently misquoted regarding his best position, referring to the 10 role rather than an orthodox striker.

you obviously haven't seen any of the young england players play. we have some of the best technically gifted young players in europe atm. Did you watch the u21s the other night ??? based on your reply you haven't. Pritchard, Tom carol, John stones, Redmond, Will hughes, eric dier, then go down in levels patrick roberts, barker for us. None of them i would class as athletes all very technically gifted and very good with the ball. Your completely writing off young english players. Even this year kane and sterling they have brilliant ability with the ball. One of our best young players is english i.e. barker.

Results at youth level are important the spain u21s the german u21s go to win the competitions.

anybody watching him vs Southampton?
No, how is he? Any good?

He had some very good moments and some poor moments as well. MOTD showed that his inexperience is one of his weaknesses. He was trying the hardest out of all the Everton players to make something happen and chasing down every ball which resulted in him knackering himself out and ended up getting subbed. He needs an experienced midfield player to teach him how to pace himself throughout games.
