Ross Barkley

I'll be genuinely staggered if City sign Barkley this summer.

I agree with you too, he'd be a good signing for us, and the longer we leave it to make this sort of signing the more his price will probably go up. His signing is dependant on players going though and we don't seem in any rush yet again to offload players. I can't see him replacing what Yaya brings to our team either, he's still too raw to control games like Toure can. However he has potential, and looking at the up and coming English players he looks to be the best of the current bunch coming through and is plenty young enough to keep improving, although there could be better players just round the corner. It's a bit of a lottery at the moment but with FFP, unless we sell or Everton want a squad player or two from us then I think this will be a difficult transfer to make happen.

Weirdly, I had a dream last night that we signed Barkley and it was he who pushed for the move.

I have a feeling that's as close as we'll come to getting him this summer, but you never know in football.

(2/2) Everton have no intentions of selling Ross Barkley and know they could command £50million plus for the midfielder

I think that Barkley needs a few more seasons to prove how good he is. I recall a few years ago everyone was raving about Wilshere. He can't even get in to the England starting 11 now. In the past few years we've seen quite a few players who looked great for Everton like Fellani and Rodwell, but when they were asked to make the step up, they were found wanting.
Rodwell's a really poor example, it's only his hamstrings that have held him back. Wilshere needs someone big & strong around him whereas Barkley is that all by himself plus his talent.

Whilst our media go five ship lengths overboard on any half decent Englishman, Wilshere was at least in part deserving of the hype at the time. Injuries and a generally poor attitude to life (Possibly as a result of the former) stagnated his development at a time he should have been the week in week out mainstay of the Arsenal side.

If Barkley got a long term injury tomorrow we could read a similar post about him in 2 years time. Wouldn't change how talented he is right now.

Daily Fail claiming everton could command 50m plus for Barkley. now THAT is what is ruining English football.

Barkley is all potential, of which we have seen a glimmer. To even MENTION £50M for him today is an absolute joke! He is so far from being good enough to play in the current City midfield it is not even funny.

Call me back in two or three seasons and let me know all about this "world class" player, as it is waaaay too early to tell if a few good games and few goals from outside the box are worth £50M. As usual, the English media have gone overboard about an above average young talent with potential to be a consistent game changer.

I love the way clubs feel that they can slam huge transfer fees against young players - £30, 40, 50m but forget that in many cases they are paying these kids a few grand a week. If Everton do rate Barkley in the £50m bracket then they have been underpaying him these last few months. That will be the issue for Everton they can turn down big money for Barkley but they will need to pay him £100,000 p/w to keep him.

This! Everyday of the week, three times on Sunday and twice on a Wednesday!
Stupidly overpriced English players. That is where Greg Dyke needs to do some work.
