Don't know anything about Rugby League, other than it bores the shite out of me. So, I'll exempt that lot from my comments:
With a few spots honourably excepted (Limerick, most of Wales, maybe parts of the English midlands too) Rugby Union, in these islands, seems to attract mainly middle-to-upper class types. It is only fair to say, that your average working class chap would not be rebuked if he attempted to join a club outside of those areas but, it's hard to fit in when you're say, a factory worker and everybody about you is a professional enjoying a more expensive lifestyle. So, the working classes are often pretty much priced out of joining their local Rugby Union club.
Another thing, that nobody involved with Rugby Union that I know will deny, is that there is still an old-school snobbery amongst the selctors. This hasn't gone away with professionalism, rather it has evolved into a subtle bullying of younger players into changing to more elite schools/clubs.
Say what you like about Association Football but if you're good enough, you'll get picked. Nobody gives a f**k if you're a docker or a doctor; just what you can do on the field.
Yeah, there's more dickheads following football but only because football is the all-inclusive game and the others (generally speaking) are not.
