Rugby World Cup 2023

Interesting from Sir Clive Woodward in his article about five things he’d do to win at the weekend:

“CANNY TACTICS

This is a World Cup semi-final. All that counts is England finding a way to win. The first tactic I’d like to see from England is to continue with the drop goal. George Ford did it brilliantly against Argentina and Owen Farrell also executed it well against Fiji.

I want to see England rain drop goals down on the Springboks. If you do it properly, it’s impossible to defend. The earlier you start dropping goals, the better. It causes defences to make mistakes.

France and Ireland lost their quarter-finals because they failed to keep the scoreboard ticking in the second half.

England should have a drop goal
target of five and look at doing at least one in the first 15 minutes. They must also take the three points each time they are on offer if they win a penalty.”

I’m sure everyone other that one person on here would agree it’s a good tactic.
If Wales pack had set one up for Biggar when they were points down with a few mins to go that match would have been different

South Africa tend to completely grind the opposition down with the scoreboard ticking. They can punish a penalty from halfway with Pollard on the pitch and completely broke England in the final with constant scores.

Considering England haven't scored many tries and South Africa will score at least a couple, it's a good tactic to just take 3pts whenever we can and look to get the ball back. Make sure we're in their territory as much as possible to avoid costly penalties.

Also a potential decoy if we are set up for the drop goal.

We're going to have to do something different to win this one. Really hope we do, but think we'll end up losing by 10pts+

In key world cup game where SA won their kicking has been massive.

Remember everyone saying the drop goal should only be 2 points after they kicked a bag-full in 1999.

The combination of Montgomery and Steyn for distance and precision was immense in 2007, but the former got zero credit here, mocked due to his first name, hair and rapid body change, despite being one of the best goalkickers ever.

I don’t think you’re wrong. As I have a foot in both camps I’m just hoping for a good game and then a nice win in the final against Argentina….

C'mon England, have we got a real chance in this? I hope we do.
It’s a single match between two teams. When we met 4 years ago we were favourites then lost our best scrummager after 5 minutes and got humped in the scrum giving away penalty after penalty. Anything can happen but I won’t be putting any money on us.

Yeah it was 15.3409 to be fair, rounded down.

Wolves were 17/2 and which would mean about a 10% chance given profit margins to win with a draw a real possibility. England 9/2 to progress, SA 1/7, so the % on that is around (18.19+12.5)/2

Marler not playing was a real mistake as well.
