Rugby World Cup 2023

Curry was heard on the ref’s mic during the game saying ‘if their player calls me a “white ****” again, what should I do?’.
Apparently in Afrikaan "Vit Kant"... (sp) means when translated, white side, which is what Bongi was relaying to his scrum.... I mean why would he want to call Curry a white C***?

Mechanically presumably you can drive upwards from there, preventing the opposing prop pushing.
It would also seem likely that it could also make the opposing prop head downwards or forwards.

Exactly. It is worth saying he wasn’t consistent with applying that specific rule but by that point he’d have been looking more for Englands infringements as SA were on top of the scrum from the moment Marler went off.

He drove upwards and across.

Genge did that certainly.
That scrum was pretty unsteady to start with - that the ref had gone to that side suggested he thought that was the side most likely to be where there wold be trouble.

Couldn't say about consistency as I've not seen any discussion, I think sometimes it depends on when in the procedure it happens.

It's quite strange - for a few years the scrum was depowered and there was a vogue for running props. Recently, it's come back to prominence and you need scrummaging props instead of runners. I'm not sure SA ever indulged in the idea that a prop's job was to do anything resembling running!

There was an England scrum earlier where the SA prop did the same thing as Genge. There’s still all lot of interpretation from the ref though and depending when the action takes place, they sometimes call for a reset first. That’s why situation comes into it so much, that scrum England had to be completely clean.
