Running thread

I've had to back off recently. I bruised my ribs playing football last Wednesday, and they have been painful since. Only managed one run since then.

Played last night again, and felt my calf tweak, so I want to rest this. Last time I had a tear of my calf muscle, I was recovering for over a month.

I've run 1700km this year so far (1056 miles). One of my goals for the year was to run my first ever half-marathon. I have run four half marathons this year, including one with an elevation gain of 484 metres. I registered one as a virtual half-marathon to make it more official.

well played, smashed your goal

Not posted in this thread for a long time, always kept an eye on it though. Some great performances and stories to read.

I’m still doing 3 x 5k’s a week in Heaton, levelled off a bit since being able to play footy as I play 7 a side 3 times a week now and body suffering in different ways!

What has been the strangest part of my year, fitness wise, is that I spent the last few years doing about 5 spin classes per week at the gym, which obviously stopped back in Feb/March, and I haven’t done one since as I didn’t feel like entertaining them when we came out of lockdown as thought I’d wait until I was comfortable to return. My ability to do decent 5k times has eradicated as the year has gone on, and I can only put it down to the gradual loss of muscle strength within my legs from no longer doing spin. I used to be able to do 5k’s in the 25/26 minute range whereas now I’m around the 28/29 minute mark. Really annoying and can’t wait to get back to spin to build the muscle back up but won’t be going anywhere near them until I’ve had the vaccine.

How far did you get mate?

Planning on 3000 miles in total next year on bike, swim and run. 250 a month between them is doable I reckon
Piece of piss. In my commuting and racing days close to 5,000 miles a year was normal on the bike. I'd be disappointed if I did more miles in the car ;)

Suppose when I was commuting to Macclesfield on a daily basis I must have easily done 3000 miles if not more, wasn’t on Strava or even had a computer on the bike in those days.

gave up football for this reason. love playing the game too much. But the injuries sustained from games took its toll. One game or another, would come come limping, bruised, fractures, black eye few times. Wasn't worth it man. Last straw was broken ankle which prevented me from earning.

Yes, the miles soon clock up with the routine of regular commuting. The plan of 3,000 miles next year of running, swimming and cycling without regular commuting is decent and probably ideal for health, fitness and some competition. Good luck with it.

nice mix! i'd like to get more swimming in next year.

i done a 10k this morning, that puts me on 1,141 for the year - last year was 1,180 so 5 days to get in 39 miles, not sure i will do. plan to do half marathon NY day for my 2 years in a row run.

My review of the year.

I ran 1715km in 2020, the distance from Manchester to Rome. One of my targets was to run a half marathon. I ran four equivalent distances and registered one as a virtual half marathon to make it official. I had not run one before this year. The hardest was in Mull, Scotland, with an elevation gain of 496 metres. My running in December has been curtailed due to weather and injury unfortunately, but I did manage a 10k yesterday.

Targets for 2021? I turn 60 in July, and another half marathon when I'm 60 is one thing I will go for. I'm also looking forward to getting back to Park Runs and a few organised 10ks. Mainly though, I aim to keep fit and active and enjoying retirement.

I would like to thank the Bluemoon running community for your help and support through this difficult year. Advice has always been freely given, taken, and appreciated. Thank you for your reports of your activities too. They are always encouraging.

Special shout out to @BlueHammer85 on your running achievements, but also for your Top 20 books thread - my favourite thread of the year, along with this one.

I'd like to wish you all a happy New Year. Stay safe, keep up the running and other activities, and keep posting in here for everyone's benefit.

Just wishing the Bluemoon running community (and cycling) a very happy new year. Hope everyone keeps finding the motivation to keep at it, it’s been a tough year and I know it’s been one I’ve certainly struggled with as event after event got cancelled but we all stuck at it in some form.
Let’s hope ‘21 is a damn sight better than ‘20!

ALL THE BEST.

As stated by others this is far and away my favourite thread on Blue Moon. Full of positivity and people getting out and enjoying the simplicity of putting one foot in front of the other, in the great outdoors.

Keep all the info and stats going in the New Year. Often reading the thread has been a source of motivation, to get the trainers on, particularly on the days when you don’t really fancy it or you’re finding reasons not to bother.

Hope everyone keeps running, keeps injury free, stays healthy and has a great New year and year ahead.
