Running thread

Happy New Tier everyone. I'm an "has been" ....or more accurately a "never was" runner actually. Haha. Hope I've offered some advice or inspiration and not misled anyone.....I'm a bit injured at the moment so trying to do a bit less. Luckily never suffered many or any long term injury in 25 years or so of running and cycling. I'll be back.

My review of the year.

I ran 1715km in 2020, the distance from Manchester to Rome. One of my targets was to run a half marathon. I ran four equivalent distances and registered one as a virtual half marathon to make it official. I had not run one before this year. The hardest was in Mull, Scotland, with an elevation gain of 496 metres. My running in December has been curtailed due to weather and injury unfortunately, but I did manage a 10k yesterday.

Targets for 2021? I turn 60 in July, and another half marathon when I'm 60 is one thing I will go for. I'm also looking forward to getting back to Park Runs and a few organised 10ks. Mainly though, I aim to keep fit and active and enjoying retirement.

I would like to thank the Bluemoon running community for your help and support through this difficult year. Advice has always been freely given, taken, and appreciated. Thank you for your reports of your activities too. They are always encouraging.

Special shout out to @BlueHammer85 on your running achievements, but also for your Top 20 books thread - my favourite thread of the year, along with this one.

I'd like to wish you all a happy New Year. Stay safe, keep up the running and other activities, and keep posting in here for everyone's benefit.
I'm rather impressed to say the least. The last sentence in the second paragraph is paramount longer term. The key is for running to become a way of life until being too old to run and then at least walking or being active.

Well done everyone. Love the inspiration from this thread. Took up couch to 5k for my mental and physical health in March then kept doing at least 3 runs a week. Aimed for 2 5ks during week and longer one (at least 5 mile longest is 8) at weekend. Been self isolating for 10 days so not had run or walk in that time and missed it. Got a slow 5k planned for Sunday. Keep going, keep posting, stay safe and healthy both physically and mentally - cheers

I've not done any running in a while but decided to dust off the trainers. Can anybody recommend any Apps or gadgetry that would help to track and record distance. Cheers and happy New Year.

Good luck, I was never a runner before September but the podge from lockdown got me into it, lost a load of weight. Using Runkeeper at the moment it’s free and does everything I want it to do in timings, distance, splits etc.

The cheapest way would be to get Strava on your phone, and strap your phone to your arm or something. If that doesn't suit you, or if you have some spare cash burning a hole in your pocket, get a smart watch from a brand like Fitbit or Garmin. This would allow you to run without your phone, and your run will be transferred to your phone or computer when you get back home. You can get watches that store and play music too, which can be good during a run.

Thanks for that. I'll price a few things up.

Yeah like Paladin says get Strava on your phone and buy something like a Garmin watch. I’ve got the Garmin Forerunner 45. It’s been fantastic for me!

Strava is the go to app mate for most. I use it but have Garmin to track it all on then downloaded to Strava

28 miles this week. Aiming for 100 miles a month. Cheated today though went on treadmill for my half marathon distance. Not sure how accurate the Treadmill mode is on my Garmin watch but I averaged just under 8 mins 20 per mile

Went out on a 10k at 7.20am this morning. Nearly went on the ice about 5 times when walking. Stuck to roads when running where I could but ran really gingerly when I had to dip onto pavement. Really chilly one but good to shake off the Christmas cobwebs and get into 2021 running. Pace shite, but was more about getting round without falling :P

Last runs were 11k on Dec 20th and 6.5k on 23rd. So hopefully get back to two runs like that and a decent pace by end of month. Ice and snow cause havoc with consistency.

Did a 17k yesterday on the Castlemain Trail yesterday and a slower recovery run with the missus today

For 13k I went a nice steady 5:11-20 pace until the last 4k where I stepped it up to between 4:25- 4:45Ks. Amazing how the realisation of being desperate for the toilet focuses the mind.

Legs feel great due to resistance band training, the roller and compression socks. Going to be more disciplined in their use this year.

Do Skins compression tights/leggings make a big difference to reducing muscle strains / aiding recovery? I have always worn shorts regardless of weather but have faced injuries in recent years and don't run as fast as I used to.

Went for a 4 mile run the other day and the final 3rd was tough with cold weather getting to my legs and muscles becoming fatigued.

Aiming to run 4/5 x a week in this lock down period.

I have been wearing a compression top (which I never used to wear) and have noticed a big difference.
