Running thread

Back in May on my birthday I weighed 17 Stone 7 pounds and decided I needed to do something as I turn 40 on my next birthday (May this year). Set myself a target of losing 40 pounds before my 40th.

Started out on the exercise bike at home and doing a lot of walking, once it started getting colder and darker in October decided i needed the gym to help keep losing the weight. So started out by running for a minute, walking for a minute on the treadmill, along the lines of couch to 5k but without using the app and slowly building it up (along with still doing the bike and other bits in the gym)

Anyway, this past Saturday i manged my first 5km run without stopping ever in about 32min (I did 5.2km in 34 mins but that includes the warm down as well) and I'm down to 14 Stone 1 pounds (So 48 pounds and still just under 4 months to go)

Never ever thought I'd either be able to run for that long or that I would actually enjoy it (well maybe not the last 1km or so!), its changed my life and I feel so much better and once the weather gets a bit better I might even venture running outside, ha!
What a fantastic and inspiring story. Well done mate you should be incredibly proud of yourself.

Well done, mate! The question you need to ask yourself is what you want to do next.
I completed couch to 5k last Spring, but with no plan on what to do next. In order to maintain my running fitness, I decided to attempt a Parkrun, and have been doing one the majority of Saturdays since.
I find the presence of other runners & the motivating marshalls a real boost, as well as the ethos of nobody is too slow or inexperienced.
Quite a few people have mentioned Park Runs to me, i reckon im going to keep at it at the gym for the time being so that the distance becomes more manageable and then by which time, the weather might be starting to get a bit better and then i'll venture outdoor

No mate, just a treadmill run for now. I'm going to build up to a park as the weather gets a bit nicer and i get a few more 5k's under my belt

Nice one

Honestly, even unfit and not ready Parkrun is something I would recommend

You can walk/jog it and just feel good at the end regardless

Gets you up and sets you for the weekend

But well done and keep going

May be worth considering trying a few outdoor runs whilst we've got some relatively mild days. I've been out this morning, and to me it's ideal running conditions. I've managed all my 5k PBs when the temperature has been between 5 and 10°C. Anything cooler & the cold air makes my lungs ache, and anything warmer & I get super sweaty. To me, it's even better when there's a bit of drizzle or light rain to cool me down!
If you are concerned about where to run or personal safety, it should be relatively easy to find yourself a running buddy either on here or through social media, or maybe join a running club. For me, I love the solitude of solo training runs, but also enjoy the comoradory of Parkruns.

Completed Peel Parkrun in Salford in 29:59 this morning which was a course PB for me.
This was despite having a rubbish night's sleep as I got to bed late after getting back from the match last night, had trouble dropping off to sleep as I was still buzzing & not doing much of a warm up this morning.
I reckon if you don't overthink the run & just get on with it, you sometimes have a better run.

I've done it twice before on my home run in Stafford, but Peel Park is a more challenging course with a bit of undulation & some muddy patches.
It also helps having a nemesis on this run, a gobby bloke who always just finishes in front of me. I made my mind up today that there's no way he's beating me!

Just been doing Park Runs on Saturdays air the moment due to my hamstring injury.
Didn't do last weekend (as most called off due to ice) so hadn't ran for two weeks and leg doesn't feel too bad.
Still a little sore but run was ok.

But on the warm down run home it got really painful again and I had to abort.
This hamstring tendonitis is taking a looooong time to heal :(

Back to rowing again I think but I'm starting to miss my longer runs.

Hi folks. Only run to keep body and mind healthy but around September I injured my back. Stopped running for a month or so. Then my back went again late December. This week was my first doing any activity again and I'm just interested how much fitness people lose if they don't train for a month or so? I've seen things say 20 percent but I think mine is much higher than that.
On a good day and on form I can do like 7 minute miles over 10k for a reference point. Went for a 'slow' jog with my cousin on Monday and whilst I could have gone quicker at around 10 minute miles I certainly wouldn't class it as easy. Put on a bit of a poker face in front of him as I'm usually substantially fitter than him. Haha. Think I've still got a bit of flu and could feel my back during it which obviously doesn't help.
It's so frustrating. I quite like doing the Garmin half marathon plans and had got my estimated V02 upto 54 and into the 'superior' range for my age which I was quite happy with as I don't have a runners build at all and quite a stocky 13+ stone. It's like taking time making a porcelain vase and then just throwing it against a wall. Extremely deflating.

Did 10.6 miles yesterday in preparation for a half marathon in May,did far too much, very stiff and leggy today, wanted to get an idea of starting time to maybe improve over the next few month, left knee started to feel weak and weather turned very cold about half 1,so abandomed my plans as I was really struggling.Ran for first 6.5 miles along Rochdale canal, then a mixture of very slow running and walking for the rest.
