Running thread

FOC here, just started the Couch to 5k this week, done three runs, finding it tough, back of my left heel aches, left hip too. Is it just because I’m just starting out? Does it get easier? My time this morning was slower than the first two.

Sounds about right.

I'm not even a FOC, but still whenever I do a new physical activity the body isn't used to it hurts like hell after.

Take it slow and focus as much on recovery as the run itself.

You shouldn’t be focusing on beating times at all, just get your fitness going and it will come naturally

You will have bad days but also good. Would really recommend walking/jogging a Parkrun every Saturday

I'm in the slightly odd position of being at peak marathon training without actually knowing which marathon I'll be running, and when. I've just been ramping up the miles as in a normal training routine.

I have got a virtual London Marathon (which I'd more or less forgotten about) place so I guess it would be logical to run that.

Over the last five weeks I've run three 20-milers and one 22-miler so I'm probably in a decent place to run a marathon so I just feel like I might as well.

To late for a manchester entry?? What about Edinburgh?

Absolutely gutted, supposed to have Hampton court palace HM tomorrow. Home from work sick yesterday, can't stop sneezing and coughing, aching all over (covid test negative). No energy what so ever. Currently watching TV on couch below a blanket. Gutted

Thanks mate, going to start taking a look soon. Guy used to work with sent me link to one in few months. Really wanted to do this as it starts and finishes in the palace and I work there

Just take it steady. I was where you are this time last year and thought I'd never improve. Now busting sub 30 minute Parkruns each week, and I'm 51.

I had it couple of weeks ago, went A&E in the end as couldn’t get in the doctors, turned out I had a chest infection and was given antibiotics.
Knocked me back for couple of weeks, been back running this week for first time since and it’s really taken it out of me, struggling like fuck and tough breathing for first mile or so as coughing etc until warmed up properly. Hopefully it’ll get easier as I get back into it.

Ah man, that's rotten luck.

But your time will come! Get better, get a couple of good weeks in and you will be ready for a race, and there are loads to choose from.

That’s a horrible one

Worst part is trying to get back, so tough mentally

Hoping I can get over my cold very shortly. Marathon in 7 days !

My other half had it last week plus 3 of our team in work who all sit in same office off during week with it. Hope you're feeling better soon mate

Took more than a minute off my parkrun, 23:51 at Oak Hill (East Barnet in North London). Pleased with that.

Today, intention was to continue marathon training with 30k. Unfortunately, weird pain spasms in my left hip after 18k saw me call the run to a halt. After a bit of research I'm none the wiser as to what I may have done. It feels like bruising but no reason to be bruised, don't think it's a stress fracture as I can support my weight. Who knows, a few days rest will hopefully do the trick..
After a lot of googling I thought my injury might have been a hip pinched nerve so did loads of hip stretching and the pain eased. For reassurance I visited a sports physio who advised gluteus medius related due to, probably, stiff hamstrings/hip flexors. Fortunately, the stretching I was doing inadvertently helped and ready to run again.

This week a gentle 9k and 15k just to ease back into it. Tuesday I'm planning on 30k and then taper starts for London Marathon on 23rd April. Feels wrong to ease off so far from the start but that's what all the advice suggests..
