Absolutely SMASHED both my 5k and 10k records, so so happy. I've been chiselling the odd second or two here and there for a while, but today knocked 51 seconds off my 5k (21.11) and 45 seconds off my 10k (44.10) I don't think I'll ever run that fast again! Buzzing.
Some v good times there Mayor West. I’ll never achieve that 5k in my pic park run. Along with Muswell Hill, Crystal Palace is the hilliest part of London. Fucking tough.

My 5km time is pretty good 21.02 but I’ve noticed that other people with similar times over 5km are much faster than me over 10km (48.23) I think that is probably because I’ve never ran a competitive 10km I just do them on my own once a week on the way home (Manchester – Sale down the bridgewater canal)

5km – 21.02

10km 48.23

Half marathon 1.48

Sounds like you're built for short fast pace rather than longer distance. Also 21.02 is better than pretty good!
I do 10k about 3/4 times a week so I know what pace I can expect to run at after 5k.

I'm not sure I'm build for anything apart from greggs tasting these days- great time over 10km that mate!

Used to run a fair bit when younger, but now aged 37, decided to start again. Running Manchester half in October, so have that to train for as motivation.
First run yesterday, 4.5k, 35 mins. I was expecting better, and had to walk on a few occasions, so a bit of an eye opener. Anyway, taking the positives, I got the 1st run done, and now have something to improve upon. Although in some pain today with my right calf and right quad (I did stretch beforehand), but hoping that is more to do with first run rather than any actual injuries. I have had an ACL reconstruction in the right knee, but that seems to be fine.

The pain could be down to stretching before the run. Can I ask which types of stretching you did?

So last week I started the 18 week Hansons Marathon Method program leading up to my first marathon in September. Easy enough atm but it will soon ramp up to six days a week running more than 90 k. I will be totally destroyed.

That is very interesting.

I’m 21:04
44:25
1:38:23
3:57:30

Not too bad for 50!!!

Got into Triathlons now, loving them though the swim is tough.

Wow that’s real good! I quite fancy triathlons the run / bike I think I’d be ok at but I’m not much of a swimmer plus I’ve dislocated my shoulder a few times so a bit hesitant!

Does anybody stretch before or after? I just go out and run, no stretches, no bodyweight routines etc. Can't believe prehistoric man when confronted by a predator, or chasing down a kill, started by saying " can you just wait until I've done a few calf raises"

5 min brisk walk before and after each run does for me although an Achilles injury on Sunday morning has had me thinking if only id warmed up properly?

I literally never stretch before or after, and touch wood never have bad pulls, the odd muscle ache but of course you'll get that from running! Makes you wonder if all this expert advice on stretching (among other things) is just guff.

Exactly the same! I’m normally too tired after. Before the marathon I did a few token stretches to make it look like I knew what I was doing!!

5k or shorter I think you should before.
Over 5k then I think you’re fine if you ease your way into the run.

Dislocated mine plenty of times in the past!! I mainly do breast-stroke on the swim, it's my weakest discipline but can make up a lot of time on the bike as that's my strongest, plus being a decent runner i'm never last even if i am after the swim stage.

Biggest event coming up this Sunday.....

Looking forward to it but apprehensive also.

Nice one mate- good luck! Let us know how u get on.

Trying to get myself back into running shape after about a year off but I picked the absolute worst time. Summer where I live is regularly 100 degrees freedom units/ 38 - 40 Celsius for the next 3-4 months.

It's killing me and I have always hated the treadmill. I've been running after dark to try to avoid the heat as much as possible
