Running thread

I’m running Manchester tomorrow and my taper has been horrible. Tried to keep the intensity relatively high and did something to my knee, so I haven’t ran since last Tuesday!

Hoping it’s alright in the morning. Will let you know how I’ve done on Monday but any time under 3:59:59 would be lovely.

Good luck to everyone doing the Manchester and London Marathons today.
Remember the #1 golden rule of marathon running: control your pace from the start (in other words, don't go off too fast!).
Cheers mate,
Apologies but rules are there for breaking!!!
Lots of love

As it's been warm for the Manchester and London Marathons today, I've made a little vid about hydration for runners.

Great advice stu, hope you don't mind me chipping in but from personal experience can I add a few bits.
It's hugely important when running to keep your electrolytes/sodium balance in check, simply glugging gallons of water can be quite dangerous as you pretty much piss out all of the electrolytes/sodium, there were lots of folks telling people to drink loads of water the day before yesterday's marathons, that's bad advice imho, there's only so hydrated the body can get and as I said you will only end up flushing the body of all the other stuff you need to keep going.
Also from personal experience, don't just fire in a pint of water after a long sweaty run, I seen loads doing this yesterday after the mara and it's so dangerous, get a banana or some sort of salty/sugary drink in instead to top your vital minerals back up.
I had loads of tests done last year as I thought I was pissing blood after every run, was scary as fuck seeing just a red/brown stream come out after a run, the docs tested me for cancer, stuck a camera in a very uncomfortable place and couldn't find anything, I changed my routine of just smashing in a pint of water before and a protein shake after a run to having a banana before and after and the problem went, thank god!!

Hope everyone ran well yesterday.

Ran the Garmin Trail Half yesterday and scraped a top ten finish. Ridiculously hot out there and so it was a proper challenging.

After years of running, and struggling, I found a really good aid to help with the heat. Wore a buff around my neck for the first time (outside winter) and was soaking it with cold water at every aid station and in exposed areas placing it over my forehead. Really helped.

Great advice above by @Stuuuuuu and @gaz76. I’m a proper sweater during exercise and lose a huge amount of water and salts so I always have a drink with electrolytes and also, when racing, take salt tablets with me or electrolyte gels.

Carry them in a flip belt (around my waist, which you don’t really notice when running.

Well done to everyone who ran yesterday, those conditions were no joke.

I did about 70km on the bike supporting people I know on the Manchester course and it was catching up with me at the end.

Definitely not a day for PB's but a day to be proud of yourself for getting through it. A good learning step in the marathon game.

Proper tough do yesterday... I did not make my goal of 3:59:59. Wasn't even close. I was well ahead of pace at Altrincham but entered the pain cave as I ran past the half way mark.

Went out for drinks with my running club mates after, and out of roughly 40 of us, only 2 actually hit their target times. I would honestly say it was the toughest conditions I've ever raced in.

Manchester marathon yesterday, finished in 3.27 which I'm happy enough with, yesterday was not a day for PB chasing, knew that after about 5km, happy to get round in one piece especially after last week's 50 mile ultra!!

Great effort Gaz, which Ultra did you do?

Thanks mate, did the Manchester to Liverpool ultra, 50 miler, finished in 7.51 and 49th place, 5th in age category, pretty pleased with that for my first go at the big boy miles

That is a brilliant time. Congratulations. What trainers did you go for?

It’s hard to know with trail runs, on rock hard, dried out soil, what to wear.

I had firm soil packed ground, wooded areas, grass and my feet felt a bit beaten up afterwards. Went with the Nike trail Pegasus which is a hybrid shoes but still unsure if that was the right choice.

Had a mare with my shoe choice, did the first 32mile in puma deviate nitro elite 3 which was all gravy, got the Mrs to meet me at mile 32 with a pair of metaspeeds that I hadn't used for ages, fucked if I know why I thought that would be a good idea, it wasn't, ran about 200m and realised my error, was in 20th position at that stage, last 18 miles were a lot tougher than they could have been.
What's the peg trails like nowadays? I was a big fan of the early ones but they seemed to go a bit shit after them

I wear one on almost every long run and similarly soak it in water before heading out the door when it's hot. I also use the salt chews ( think were recommended on here). I don't like the gels and find the chews make me sip more water when I might not have

Hello Manchester, (k gokmen from istanbul )
11th July Oasis at Manchester, i bought my ticket today; hopefully coming back to my second home :))
just 2 3 days i will stay (again) like in 2000 21th july wembley Oasisgig. I dont like long trips.

Anyway, when I arrive, I’d like to do a short run on a course or in a park in Manchester. I don’t want to say I’ve never trained in Manchester in my life. I’ll message you before I come, and maybe you can recommend me a route. Hopefully, we’ll meet when I’m there.
