Running thread

2nd sub 19 run in a week a couple of days ago, after breaking 19 for the first time last Friday.

Down to 18:28 now.

Goals for the rest of the year:
- Get under 40:00 in the 10k, still not done it, haven't raced it enough either.
- Break 18:00 for the 5k.

I know the latter is probably more of a long shot but I feel like I'm in that phase at the moment where I don't know where my ceiling is, just keep finding more in the tank.

Cross country season coming soon, looking forward to it.

Tried to start running to help support my wife who’s doing the London marathon next year.

Feel like I’m working up the distances and my cardio but my knees are just in pieces. I’ve got crunching sounds when I go up stairs, pain if I’m walking down stairs. Pain if I’m sat in a chair too long. I’ve tried to build in some strength training but doing squats etc is just more pain.

Could do with shifting some weight which won’t be helping I’m sure but perhaps it’s something under the surface.

I don’t know if I need to just go to a physio or it’s something worse.
What shoes are you running in?

Another 64 miles done in August! Still going and improving. Although ran in Fleetwood saturday thinking nice and flat, the sea breeze destroyed me didnt have a drink so struggled and stopped at 8. Happy with the battle though! First 10k done in under an hour aswel this week first time in a long while. Coming up to 6 months without any alcohol this Monday
Six months off the beer is ace mate, especially through the summer, I'm down to 11 days off it after falling off the wagon over the summer like a dick head!!
The boozing and running just don't mix for me, your miles better off without it

Sub 40 should be a piece of piss for you going off your ever decreasing 5ks mate, you have me starting to feel the heat as the unofficial bluemoon champ!!
I blame it on age.....and laziness

Make sure you are gradually building up to the marathon, your wifes training plan won't start properly until January, so you want to gradually build up to the distance required week 1.

Most marathon beginners plans start at an amount of running that is way too much for somebody who doesn't run at all. Most of the time they assume somebody has run a 10k or a half, so they usually have 2 hours+ of running in week 1.

So I'd advise a slow build up to avoid aches and pains in the knee, before January there's is time for maybe a beginners 10k plan that should get your body adjusted to start a marathon plan.

Maybe see the physio if the knee pain is now persistent and not easing off.
Cheers mate, I’m not actually doing the marathon but I suppose same advice is useful. I was just going to go for maybe a 10k with her when she’s in the depths of the training in winter as support.

I’ve got private medical through work so got an appt next week to see if there’s anything under the surface.

That could be your issue mate, might be worth going and getting a gait analysis done to see if your shoes are causing issues, pretty much any running shop does them, they will try and sell you a new pair but I would just tell them you will think about it and get them online where you can usually find them cheaper, if you post a pair of shoes your after on here I can usually find a discount code knocking about

Yeah I did go to somewhere mate and they said the ones I had were ok for what I needed. I do genuinely think it's something a bit more than just a bit of knee pain from ill fitting shoes sadly.

Ive got a GP appointment on Monday and then I can take that referral to my Bupa and get whatever I need with physio etc.

Morden again for me. 34 mins dead, was aiming for under 34 but let a kid and his mum finish in from of me. She also had 34 dead. Conditions lot better than last few weeks/months, nice breeze blowing across the course. Been struggling with my anxiety all week and even today almost turned for home on way there. I knew I wanted to do it, knew it would do me good and to start it the way I felt was a bigger achievement than finishing it.

Well I finished my first park run this morning, but missed out by 5 seconds on 30 minutes. Really enjoyed running with others, and will be back next Saturday.
Well done Big Joe. I did my first one recently too. Deffo got the bug now. I think they’re a brilliant thing to do and it’s such a nice community of people. Glad you’re reeled in mate!

Group of Northern Ireland fans did one in Cologne this morning ahead of game tomorrow. I know most of them and couple are close friends. I'm sure hangovers a plenty at the start as few of them went to Luxembourg game on Thursday then travelled to Cologne
