Running thread

zero motivation
too many heavy nights and more to come
even a 15 min is a struggle

bring on 1st Jan

I’m going to try keep pushing myself out over the next few weeks, I find if I leave it for a week it gets hard. Two weeks not running and booze and food on top of it will be even worse.

That’s some good swimming time there mate.

Hoping it tones me ip a little (complimenting all the other stuff I do) as well as kick starting my day.

It can be relaxing too although it can lush the cardio if you want it too.

I grew up a a swimmer (probably why I’ve still got those swimmers shoulders today!).

It is a good way to start your day & wake you up. I prefer to do it first thing, but sometimes have to just go for whatever slots are available.

Its amazing how you can get in a downward spiral regarding running. I used to do parkrun regularly (140 runs) up until COVID. And part way through the pandemic I was as fit as I have been for years through running.
But somewhere along the way I just stopped and now 2 years later I don't think I could run 1K.
I need to motivate myself to start again but at 56 its not easy.

Yeah, same here (but I got demolished by Covid then subsequently long Covid. Took about a year to get some kind of running form back and it's nowhere like what it was. Few variables involved but Covid was absolutely a contributing factor to my running downfall.
Getting that routine back is the often toughest bit but try to kick start it again.

Park Runs are great for that. There's a weekend buzz of energy and sanctimony once you've knocked one of those out by 9:30 wish (I'm still talking about park runs by the way).

Ran the Valencia marathon this morning. Was hoping for 3h30 and it was going well until km 35. Fell apart at that point but managed to shuffle to the end in 3h34 (watch time). Chip time was 40 seconds slower but pretty happy with that seen as my previous PB was 3h53.

Definitely in the "never doing a marathon again" camp at the minute but that'll probably change in a few days when I get an email with a discount for next year's! Would love to do an ultra though.

Need a good rest now after all the training and it will be nice to have a lie in at the weekend.

Said it before but would definitely recommend Valencia if you're up for travelling for a marathon. Nice flat course and good weather/food/beer!
Well done. Knocking 20 minutes off your PB and going well up to the 22 mile mark is a success. Just need to work on the last 4 miles next. :-).

How does your HM time compare to this?. If its a lot less than half your marathon time...say over 10 minutes less then you can improve your marathon time by better pacing rather than getting "fitter".

Regardless, the experience in Valencia sounds good.

I'm struggling to get out at the moment. To be frank, my mental well-being tends to take a hit at this time of year. Currently lying in bed on my phone when I should be en route to work... Will get up in a minute.

Need to get the legs moving as I believe that physical fitness and good mental health go hand-in-hand.
I managed to run 3 days out of the last 4 for a total of about 13 miles. Its been a slow process but my transition from summer cycling to winter running is now complete.

I'm looking forward to increasing the mileage in December. Bring on the cold weather!!

What you playing at lads? Earn your downtime and Christmas dinner. Only gonna feel worse sat about feeling sorry for yourselves, you only get one life and everyone knows that movement makes you happy. Inactivity leads to inflammation and sadness.

Start small, plenty of walking every day, set a target like 8-10k steps per day and try to track how many calories you're consuming daily. Sounds a stupid one but I started doing 100 press ups daily for 100 days, 100 days before Christmas. Then 50 leg raises on top of this for 50 days. Just a little challenge that's held me accountable each day. Half the reps or maybe do a step goal each day.

Been recovering from IT band syndrome after an endurance race in September so only just starting back running very lightly now. Go to the gym twice a week and feel this is enough on top of my little challenge and a bit of open water swimming. You get one life, gents. Doing a little bit a day is loads better than doing fuck all or bursts of too much.

Cheers mate. My half marathon PB is 1h38 from nearly 2 years ago but I've not raced a half since so it's had to gauge where I'm at over the shorter distance.

I was reasonably happy with my pacing for the most part and felt comfortable until the last part of the race. Started slower than I wanted to because of the crowds and some bloke stopped in front of me at a water station at 30km so knocked me off my stride. Looking back at my splits, I'd love to run 4 of the last 8 kms again but it's easy to say that after sleeping on it. I was all over the place mentally by that stage.

Parkrun is fantastic. It puts you in a great mood for the day after finishing one, and you can just trot along at whatever place you are comfortable with. There will always be a group of people around you running at the same pace.

You're at a great age for enjoying running. I'm 61, loving the running (when it's not raining). I just need a slight injury to ease up.

Interesting. Mostly good even pacing.

Rough figures:- 2nd HM was about 8 minutes slower than 1st HM. Target pace was 5.00 minutes per Km which you maintained until 35 Km. Thereafter the pace drop to about 5.30 per km.

Overall a good controlled effort. Only small improvements could be made? Improve stamina to maintain pace for last 7 k? I reckon each half marathon within 4 minutes of each other is a good target.

Was the course flat? Was the terrain harder at the end than the start? What's the reason for slow km at 35K (6.06) ?
