Running thread

Hi folks. Only run to keep body and mind healthy but around September I injured my back. Stopped running for a month or so. Then my back went again late December. This week was my first doing any activity again and I'm just interested how much fitness people lose if they don't train for a month or so? I've seen things say 20 percent but I think mine is much higher than that.
On a good day and on form I can do like 7 minute miles over 10k for a reference point. Went for a 'slow' jog with my cousin on Monday and whilst I could have gone quicker at around 10 minute miles I certainly wouldn't class it as easy. Put on a bit of a poker face in front of him as I'm usually substantially fitter than him. Haha. Think I've still got a bit of flu and could feel my back during it which obviously doesn't help.
It's so frustrating. I quite like doing the Garmin half marathon plans and had got my estimated V02 upto 54 and into the 'superior' range for my age which I was quite happy with as I don't have a runners build at all and quite a stocky 13+ stone. It's like taking time making a porcelain vase and then just throwing it against a wall. Extremely deflating.
I feel your pain as I've had loads of troubles this year, causing me to lose a lot of fitness after missing weeks upon weeks of running.

It's now coming back after a few weeks of focused, gradual increases in volume. It will be the same for you - just be patient and allow yourself a few weeks.

Pleased to get an unexpected 18-miler in this morning. I'm pretty wiped out now but I don't care!

Belated staff Xmas do last night so I had a massive pizza and loads of whisky which is all of course full of calories, so they would have helped me to run that distance.

Hoping to keep up a decent weekly mileage and focus more on speed now, with the possibility of a marathon in April.

Yes mate, just irritating my fitness drops of a cliff considerably more than what I see quoted elsewhere.
Even more annoying that I initially injured my back doing a favour for my cousin installing one of those water punchbags on his wall. Tried sticking it on just the one shoulder not realising it weighs 70kg. Never really struggled with injuries before and guess its sadly just a sign of growing old.
Still coughing up quite a bit of phlegm from the flu and resting hr is up to mid 50's so think it's a combination of all of the above.

Hopefully your fitness hasn't actually taken the hit that you think - give it a few weeks and it will 'awaken'.

Ran a 10 mile trail race in the dark last night. Ran it with the missus but great being back out, with the headlamp on and the aid stations also had schnapps. Two of those helped with the cold.

Sadly the left knee felt a bit ropey, which is ironic as I have not been running for two months due to my right. Hopefully nothing major as it was great to be back out there.

Back in May on my birthday I weighed 17 Stone 7 pounds and decided I needed to do something as I turn 40 on my next birthday (May this year). Set myself a target of losing 40 pounds before my 40th.

Started out on the exercise bike at home and doing a lot of walking, once it started getting colder and darker in October decided i needed the gym to help keep losing the weight. So started out by running for a minute, walking for a minute on the treadmill, along the lines of couch to 5k but without using the app and slowly building it up (along with still doing the bike and other bits in the gym)

Anyway, this past Saturday i manged my first 5km run without stopping ever in about 32min (I did 5.2km in 34 mins but that includes the warm down as well) and I'm down to 14 Stone 1 pounds (So 48 pounds and still just under 4 months to go)

Never ever thought I'd either be able to run for that long or that I would actually enjoy it (well maybe not the last 1km or so!), its changed my life and I feel so much better and once the weather gets a bit better I might even venture running outside, ha!
Great story mate. That was me, six years ago, aged 55. I remember building up to my first non-stop 5km. I eventually lost 4 stones and completed the Manchester Marathon - my first, aged 60. Stick with it, and you will really feel the benefit in a very much improved lifestyle.

Quite a few people have mentioned Park Runs to me, i reckon im going to keep at it at the gym for the time being so that the distance becomes more manageable and then by which time, the weather might be starting to get a bit better and then i'll venture outdoor
There's nothing better than a Parkrun on a sunny Saturday morning. Sets you up nicely for the rest of the day.

I've had an injury for the last two months. Here are some recent Parkrun times that illustrate my demise.

24/09/2022 24:08 Longford Park (my best ever)
26/11/2022 27:14 Alexandra Park
28/01/2023 29:37 Alexandra Park

The run at the end of November was when I realised I couldn't run the injury off, so I've rested mainly since. Just the odd short run once a week.

So after 2 months rest, my tendonitis has finally gone. I ran 6km on Friday, then 5km on Saturday and again this morning, with no adverse reaction in my tendon.

I'm now at the stage where my legs are aching after these runs, and that's a really good feeling. I just need to build up my fitness again now, which will take some time.

Not directly running related but I go swimming as my cross-training activity between runs
The price of a swim at the Manchester Better leisure centres has just gone up.from £4.00 to £5.40 which by my rudimental maths skills is a 35% increase.
I've decided to take the p*** too by swimming for 90 minutes rather than the hour I've paid for!
