Running thread

Whilst training well I’ve also been burning the candle at both ends these last couple months
Had a couple stag doos, mates nights out and got carried away and last weekend I had a big jolly up on a work trip - and this time last week I was laid up in bed with a chest infection
So prep wise it’s not been great and paid the price

17 miles is about the furthest I've ever run. Bizarrely it was on one of the Garmin half marathon coach plans. Don't know whether it was supposed to be kms instead of miles and hadn't been converted correctly or what.

Sort of hit a wall about 15 miles which is odd as I can pretty much do a half marathon without any training by taking it steady. Bought a Camelpak after that but never done that kind of distance again.

The thought of a full marathon makes me feel sick. Especially lugging a 85kg frame about. Be nice to say I've done one though and have it ticked off.

Hi for it mate, you won't regret it. I ran the Manchester Marathon in 2021, aged 60. If I hadn't done it then, I probably wouldn't ever have done one, based on my injury record of late.

Mate keeps yapping on at me to. Think I just need to get times out of my head and complete one. He's about 2 stone lighter than me and a whippet. Can keep up with him on flat and downhill but he pulls away from me when going uphill. My Garmin has been very motivating for me personally as I never ran outside up until about 5 years ago but it can make me a bit OCD about stuff.
 
3 miles along river at work today at lunchtime. First run in 3 weeks after coughing and sneezing for 2 weeks then at home in Northern Ireland for friend's wedding last weekend.
 
Very slow 5k today with just 11 days till London Marathon. Wore my new trainers, Brooks 15 Ghost, they seemed comfortable and caused no issues. The closer I get the more apprehensive I get about my pace. Trust the training is the advice, we shall see.

Not overly happy to be allocated the 'Red' start..

I recommend the marathon. However, you need to train properly. Nutrition, both generally and specifically on longer runs are paramount. You need a more patient and serious attitude.

But it's worth it. The secondary effects on your general running fitness and shorter distance speeds can be significant.

It sounds like you already have a good base fitness level and you are not too old!? So make the most of it......

Forgot I had a 10k signed up bank holiday May - so need to train for that

It's not too bad mate for somebody of my build. I have more of a rower's physique than a runner. I've got a Concept 2 in my flat but haven't used it in a while as I prefer the fresh air and being outside (even if it's raining). Maybe that in itself is an indication of age as I never got it when parents/grandparents used to say 'go outside and get some fresh air' when I was younger. I'm 37.

I'm quite disciplined at following plans so I definitely think I could do one. I'd like to do one in sub 3:30 but 3:45 is probably more realistic. Maybe have to give it more consideration next time I'm asked.
