Running thread

Well makes your time even more impressive. A couple of hills would not be a bad thing as I am hammering the step machine and cross-trainer in the gym but I currently dont have my running, especially at speed, legs. Might just do it a nice easy pace to get a few miles in the legs.

One big hill you do 1.3 times. Tough as fuck but you get the beauty of a downhill section later.

...
So i've taken another approach, which is active travel. Now i either run (or cycle) to work, for some reason it's much easier for me mentally to keep it up. I guess because it's a journey i have to do anyway, whether it's bus, car or whatever.

Lacks variety admittedly, but can vary the pace at least.
This is an excellent way to do it if you can. I trained for my first marathon by running and cycling to and from work. Unfortunately, work is now 20 miles away...

I really struggle to keep myself motivated for running. I can do a month or so, then something will happen that busts the rhythm and struggle to get it back.

Good way to do it.

I sometimes get off the train a lot earlier and run home.

Saves a lot of time and hassle instead of going home, getting changed and out again

After my recent efforts I have turned into the tin man. Quit the park run after 1k yesterday with hangover issues at a split time of 9 minutes.

Impressive sick though.

Great thread!
I've been following it with interest. I'm nearly 50 and was 15st 8 (on a good day!)
My job is physical, so although over weight still generally fit. Or so i thought.
Work was less busy at the end of January, so i decided to go out and have a test run. I really like Dovestones, so chose that as a place to start.
Managed a 3k ish run/walk in about 30 mins! So realised a lot of work needed to be done. Like others on here, i'm self employed so cannot just run when i want, and have to save energy for the job. Also i have to bare in mind any injury or strain will impact my income.

So i'm currently running once or twice as week as jobs dictate (on my own). The 3k times slowly came down below 20 mins. Last month they opened the top part of the reservoir, so you can run right round. This increased the distance to 4.5k. And with a bit of doubling back i can run a 5k route. I've been doing 25 sit ups and 20 press daily.
Now the thing is i'm not going to change my diet this late in life, so curries and kebabs are to stay i'm afraid! What i can do is go long periods without food when working.
So since January, i just eat at tea time and some supper. Again all the wrong things!
Either way, i'm still losing weight and have enough energy to do my work and run. My 5k times are now under 30 mins, and i've just started increasing my distance. (7k this morning)
I've lost nearly two stone in weight and my body shape is changing.
So my target is to get to 10k and then try to do it in around 1 hour. I don't plan on running any more distance than that, as this isn't a hobby for me, just a means to get/maintain fitness.
I must say the 7k this morning felt great. I didn't push myself as it was about adding 2k distance. The time was about 45mins, but i felt totally in control of my breathing. No aches or pains afterwards either.

Nice one. In my experience, once you start running beyond 10K the weight starts to come off. I ran 5-10K for years but never lost weight cos of still eating huge bowlfuls of pasta & pesto, thinking I was being healthy! And drinking a bit too probably didn’t help.
It was only when I combined the exercise with eating less in amount, and reducing carbs, that I lost weight.
Good luck with the 1hour runs, sounds a good aim - I want to get back to doing that at least once a week, plus a park run 5k too.

Putting us all to shame here. Rest day and back on the step machine and cross trainer tomorrow.

Out again tomorrow if weather is ok for 30 mile bike ride pluscrun straight after, hopefully 10k. Few beers today may not be conducive though.

Nice, hopefully not on the path??

Nice work. I enjoyed reading that.

Another 12 miles this morning in 1:36. Feeling great currently, done 720 for the year now. Aiming for 1000 in total.
You inspired me to check my distance from the year and I'm surprised to see that I've run 935.4 miles so far, despite being out for about 7 weeks injured. It's great to see these stats because they can be really inspiring, as evidenced by you giving yourself the 1,000 mile target.

Think the targets are the key, whether that me a big run coming up, or wanting to get a specific time, the goals keep you motivated.
Well done on over 900, great effort.

Thanks for the donation mate, much appreciated.
Did a Duathlon tonight, 11 mile bike plus 5k out in Wigan, hilly as fuck but completed bike in 36:08 and run in 22:28, think I’m about ready for the Triathlon. New bike was great , made life much easier.

Well done pal. Used to run/walk round Dovestones every morning at 6am. Not done it for a year

If anyone is just starting or looking to increase their running exploits, BUPA do some pretty decent training plans.

To date, I've only done a couple of half marathons. 1st was training with a mate - 1:57; 2nd used BUPA's training programme - 1:46.

Mentoring a young lady for Warrington/EHM, who could barely walk half a mile 3 years ago due to problems and just completed 12 miles last weekend using the same programme with her.

No probs. Some great times there Inchy. Did a 5k in the woods the other day very slow to say the least so going to be toughter and take longer than expected to get back to decent times.
