Running thread

What are peoples thoughts on runs leading up to a race? Not particularly a 10k as i wouldnt normally worry about how much i do before a 10k, but for say a half marathon, at what point do you just allow your legs to rest prior to a race?

Reason i ask is a few years ago i did chester half marathan. I was expecting to run sub 1:50 and had trained for it and that was a comfortable time. On the day it was like carrying lead weights in my legs and i dragged myself round in just under 2 hours. Only thing i could think of was i did a 16k run the week before on the weds and the race was on a sunday.

personally think you should keep up running right up to the day of the race

have the odd couple days off here and there, but a few days before do light small distance runs

If you follow any of the training plans leading up to a HM, the week before is usually tapering down with shorter, less intense runs just to keep the legs ticking over.

I normally take a week off of long runs but do a gentle 4/5 miles on the Wednesday before. Certainly wouldn’t run the full distance.

I have done it before and then left a few days break, but this week I'm just doing a longer walk tonight instead of worrying over a run before sunday.

I did my first HM at the tender age of 18... some 40 years ago. Having trained pretty well for it, I was that nervous about finishing I ran 12 miles the night before the race to prove to myself I could it! Needless to say I had a fkn disaster!! I walked from 6 miles and finished in 2.45 I did learn rather a lot though haha

I would properly taper for a couple of weeks if I was planning to race it or aim for a time etc.

Can I use this mornings as my time, new pbs all round, buzzing with that.

Doesn’t compute with me at all that someone can run those distances at those speeds. I just smashed my 5k pb by going under 26 mins for the first time and I don’t think I could have gone a second faster!

You trying to shame us all?
Nothing of the sort mate, Im more in the "If I can do it anyone can do it" camp.
18 months ago i was 15 stone smoking 30 a day and struggling to get under 26 mins for a parkrun.
Plus there are lads in the strava club that are much quicker than me, I reckon they must be a lot younger lol

Just a quick one for those doing the 10k ,I guess we are doing Elapsed time,to prevent people stop/starting the watch.I think if you set run type to "race" when you have uploaded to Strava this gives you the lapsed time .

What's with the auto pause on Strava? That's really annoying
