Running thread

Mainly run between 5k to 8k.

Aching like hell from Sunday if im honest
I would say you do not have enough time train for the HM. A cautious approach is to increase distance by a maximum of 10% per week. If target distance is 20K from 10K then it would take 7 weeks.

Or say add 2k per week. So that is 5 weeks. That is just to get round, not comfortable, and you may not enjoy it. And gives no time for tapering or resting. It would be wise to train for a HM in at least 2 months instead.

This is for normal people. Different rules apply to special cases like Gaz76..........

reckon as a first timer doing a HM we can fit enough training into this in the short time we have?

Google HM training plans. Most tend to be 12 weeks if you’ve never done the distance.
Typically you shouldn’t increase your weekly mileage by more than 15%-20%.
Short runs in the week then long run on Sunday. Build up a couple of miles each week for the long run then drop back distance every 4 weeks for recovery.
Once you get to 9-10 miles you should be fine to go the full distance.

When I did my one and only half marathon in 2019 I thought I was going to die, lol.

Had never ran over 10k in my life, but had done a couple of 10k’s in the months before the half, so as I felt they were pretty easy then I assumed that to carry on running and do 21k would be easy.

How wrong I was!

I‘d say up to 15k was fine, then it just changed to hell. My legs felt like they no longer belonged to me and every step felt as if my legs could just give away and I’d hit the deck. 6k or so of feeling like that was horrible. I ate jelly babies, had a couple of gels, tried everything to give me an energy boost, nothing worked.

Only when I was 100metres from the finish line on Deansgate, and I could see the line, did I feel confident I could finish, only because I knew I’d literally crawl over it if I had to, lol.

Was really proud of my time though, I wanted to break 2 hours as I’d been doing the 10k’s in about 54 mins, but couldn’t manage it, but did 2 hours 11.

A fantastic experience, but anyway, moral of story, I’d never do it again without doing some form of proper training plan.

Nice easy 10k today after a gruelling 8k over some nasty hills yesterday (see pics). Different ball game doing the hill running, so will have to spend more time on it. The pain in my glutes, today, tell me Its a necessity. Rest day tomorrow.View attachment 13093View attachment 13092View attachment 13094
Wow where’s that Frank? Looks stunning. My arse and hips always hurt like hell after hill running, but always feels it does me the world of good.

It’s on the jurassic coast, Durdle Door, 30 mins outside Bournemouth.

Yes, hoping to reap the benefits as the pain today suggests I have worked a few underused muscles, so can only be a good thing. Going to pop a decent hill run into my diary every couple of weeks from now on. Always used to run hills up North but clearly got out of the habit.

Had my first Covid jab (AZ) at 2:30pm today, so celebrated with a nice easy 5k at 4pm. Well, not that easy really. I struggled a bit. This 21k is looking a bit of a stretch right now.

Id recommend for anyone who hasnt done a half before to do at least 2 or 3 runs of of over 10 miles in training
