What do people listen to to zone out on their runs?

I find it difficult to run unless I have zoned out and I need music to achieve that, only issue is I get bored listening to the same albums/playlist successively. Any suggestions?

I was with you until about midway through my marathon training plan when they didn't allow "in-ear" headphones for a HM race so I went without music and really enjoyed it. Since then I did a number of runs without music and you soon become used to taking in the sights or just having a conversation in your own head. It's much more enjoyable generally.

Failing that, something with a consistent beat always works well to keep the legs moving. Plenty of playlists on spotify/youtube. Hard to advise as no idea what your genre is!

usually - i'll listen to LBC for the first half of my run then i got a run playlist (upbeat Pop songs mostly)

or the album of the week nomination we have here.

for Parkruns and signed up races i don't have headphones

Personally, I'm just the opposite. I like to hear what's going on around me & don't like to dampen any of my senses.
I do most of my running on a path converted from a disused railway so have to share it with cyclists & dog walkers so like to hear other path users approaching from behind.
I'm also a little bit old fashioned so like to acknowledge anyone I pass with a friendly "morning" & thank all the marshalls I pass during Parkruns.
That sounds like me, mate. Used to listen to music but now much prefer to know everything that's going on around me. Aiming to do my second parkrun on Saturday, at least at that time of day the heat will be bearable!

I'm a bit uncertain about the Parkrun on Saturday. I'm doing Stretford as I'm up.in Manchester for the match, but the forecast is for 20c at 0900, which will be the warmest conditions I've ever attempted to run in.
I guess I'll just take it steady, not worry about a PB & bring plenty of water!

I usually listen to an audio book, using Aftershokz bone conduction headphones. On a Parkrun, I pause the book for the starting instructions or if someone wants to talk to me while we're running. They don't totally block out other noises, so you can still hear cars and other road noises when you're out running.

Nice one mate. The days of me doing a PB have long gone, just doing it now for the fitness and feel good factor! Only started what I call 'long distance' some years ago in my mid 40s - hadn't run longer than a few hundred yards continuously since my school days (with the exception of outside Elland Road). Did 29 minutes last Saturday and will be delighted with that again this weekend, then off to the match

Yes, Parkruns every Saturday - there’s no need to ‘go for it’, I rarely do unless I’m really prepared for it - just have a nice jog/walk and it will set you up perfectly before the match - you’ll feel good for it

Podcasts on BBC Sounds to start off a run for me, e.g. The Unbelievable Truth; One Small Thing...

Also, loads of music - too much to mention. I'm forever trying new stuff and compiling playlists. James have got tonnes of great running tracks. Also Gomez, Stone Roses, Led Zeppelin, Mansun, Everything Everything, Chic, PJ Harvey, Radiohead, White Denim, Turin Brakes...

Radiohead for running! Not sure about that

5k before work and before it gets to 33 later. First run if the week due to heat and also having to go into office 3 days. One morning I got up earlier than usual intending to get train to Kingston and run the 5k asking river to Hampton court palace rather than direct train. Sods law Kingston train cancelled so ended up unable to get a run in. This morning had faster mike, steady mile then slower mile. Reading about what people listen to, I don't listen to anything as like to be aware of my surroundings etc. I run lot of roads etc

I witnessed an example of why not to wear headphones this morning. Went out for a walk up to Stafford Castle & around the surrounding woods on some pretty quiet & secluded footpaths .
On my way back, I caught up a lady walking 2 dogs who was completely unaware of my presence as she was wearing in-ear headphones. I try not to sneak up on people by crunching gravel & sticks & clearing my throat.
One of her dogs stopped to pick up a stick & she turned round to realise I was there & seemed a bit startled. We had a friendly chat & I put her mind at rest.
I'm not a scary person & was no threat to her, but if someone with bad intentions was behind her there may have been a different outcome.

Another reason why 4.30am runs are the best, anytime after 6.30am in central Manchester you constantly have folk in the way either wearing headphones or glued to their phones with not a clue what is going on around then, zombies everywhere.
I wear aftershokz for music and podcasts. They great as you can hear everything around you, although lately I've being running more and more with no music as it's just a more chilled experience, I do keep the shokz on as my garmin tells me my mile splits pace and distance etc, god knows how folk work that out without a watch

4:30 is ridiculous though ! haha

I've managed a run most days recently, but missed the last two days due to injury.

I rarely get injured, but I've picked up a bruised left heel. I probably got it on Wednesday evening, playing football, but I have no recollection of a challenge that could have caused it.

So I'm reluctantly missing my usual Parkrun today. I've had a bruised heel before, and although running is less painful than walking, I think only complete rest from running will bring about the quickest recovery. Very annoying, but I suppose it is for the best.

For those of you with a Garmin watch and that do Parkrun, there is a new watch screen that holds all your Parkrun details. Useful if you forget your barcode or if you get injured whilst out on a run.
