Russian invasion of Ukraine

Amazing story in TIME magazine on how Zelensky avoided Russian Assassination squads in the first few days of the war.
Stories starting to appear in the rest of the mediah that reference it.

Now you're being silly.

It's a simple question. Which would be the worst thing? Nuclear winter for a thousand years, or giving in to Putin?
Ah a rerun of the old "Better Red than Dead " scenario but this time applying to Russian Fascism.
Both of your points will, in fact, result in the same outcome - because Putin will keep trying to take another chunk of land till we are prepared to say no.
That is how dictators work, or do you have a problem with the reality of history?
Saying "No" to Putin now before he attempts to grab a chunk of a Nato country is probably the only way to stop it escalating.

And some are not.

I like Biden personally, but his comment was a poor gaffe, scripted or unscripted. Having said that, generally he’s handled Ukraine as well as his very limited options have allowed.

Don’t know anything about the other guy, other than I learned nothing and didn’t understand the insight he was attempting to provide.
He's done well, much better than I expected after Afghanistan, but sadly, for Biden to keep making the gaffs he does, he only emboldens Putin.
I guess it's not too bad in reality, as, after each gaff, Biden goes back to Congress for another multi-billion funding package to support Ukraine which is sorely needed.

What these people (autocrats) never understand is that democracy will always create superior nation states as it creates hierarchies of competence, which in turn create wealth.

Autocracies, on the other hand, inherently create hierarchies of power, which see competence and intellectualism removed as they are considered a threat to the power of those in the hierarchies.

Russia's failed invasion is an ideal example of that: billions of dollars of defence funding has been embezzled by the hierarchy's kleptocrats, skilled competency had been replaced with brutal assault and junior Russian officers/soldiers have been insufficiently trained, equipped with decrepit old rubbish and consequently slaughtered by competent Ukranian forces.

They can scream about western democracy not representing the entire world until they are blue in the face, yet this system is inherently predisposed to world leadership (a world order).
Can’t argue with that.
On the other hand, I am uncomfortable when we (the West) try to impose our cultural norms on others, eg our view of human rights. Even in the EU, we have this dilemma. The Commission is insisting on certain norms which Poland eschews. Poland maintains their judiciary is a matter for them, whereas the EU say there is a standard all must adhere to.
Then there is China which has lifted hundreds of millions of people out of poverty without any semblance of democracy or human rights as we understand them.
I‘m returning to football now, political philosophy is not my forte!

I’m afraid you’ve not convinced me to watch it. If all states should be free to develop along their own lines in accordance with their culture, that clearly can’t apply to Ukraine right now and doesn’t do anything to justify the mass killing of Ukrainian citizens by an external aggressor even if Russian culture encourages them to try and subjugate their neighbours. Maybe I’ve missed the point but I can’t bring myself to spend 35 minutes watching some old fool whose knowledge and expertise relates more to the 16th rather than the 21st century as far as I can make out.
Quick responses:
1.Russia considers Ukraine part of the motherland so not interfering. (Sophistry, but that’s their view).
2.Starkey not an attractive person but no fool.
3. Being old is not the same as being stupid, otherwise most of us on here would be in serious trouble!

What’s the difference? (Reductio ad absurdum.)

I am not interested in the opinion of a historian whose two claims to fame/infamy are his undoubted knowledge of Tudor history and his blatant racism. I don’t care about his opinions on contemporary geo-political issues whatever they are. Whether a racist can be described as stupid or a fool is another question, and one that I also have little interest.
