Russian invasion of Ukraine

Quick responses:
1.Russia considers Ukraine part of the motherland so not interfering. (Sophistry, but that’s their view).
2.Starkey not an attractive person but no fool.
3. Being old is not the same as being stupid, otherwise most of us on here would be in serious trouble!
Starkey, like Peter Hitchins holds very strident, dogmatic views on most topics. People like that lack judgement and perspective which renders them somewhat foolish in my eyes.

Ahh Russia "considers" another country part of their motherland do they? Fucking hell Vlad why didn't you say so in the first place?! Crack on fella.

Tell you what, I consider next door's garden part of my motherland, I might smash through the back fence, rape his wife, kill his kids, blow up his shed with a stick of dynamite and move in.

Brilliant documentary on BBC iPlayer about the assassination attempt on Nalvany.

Jaw dropping stuff.
I've listened to 'The Litvinenko Affair' on the British Scandal podcast and it is scary stuff what happened there. The Salisbury Poisonings on Netflix is also worth a watch.

It never ceases to amaze me what lengths the Russians will go to in taking out their opponents or seeking revenge.

Theresa May's piss weak response to the Salisbury attack should have been a national scandal. A British citizen was murdered, and at least one British police officer was almost murdered, by a hostile foreign spy on British soil.

Wars have started over less.

Don't forget to leave a Swastika flag in the living room and a bag of coke on the table so that your case doesn't even need to go to court

Maybe, but Russia is a tough one to deal with.

We know they did it; they know that we know they did it; they denied doing it and that leaves us with a massive problem. If we then show our hand and reveal how we know they did it then we effectively reveal our source of information, and that could be very detrimental to our intelligence services.

May's response would have been tempered by our intelligence services based on current operations and the situation on the ground in Russia. I'm not sure any other Prime Minister in the same situation would have done or said anything differently.

That piss weak response combined with all the other piss weak responses to Russian aggression have all contributed to Putin being emboldened to launch this war 2 months ago. The shooting down of MH17 on its own should have been enough to impose severe sanctions on Russia.

You would be hard pushed to find any Russian who thinks Ukraine is really an independent sovereign nation. See also Moldova, Georgia and, maybe, the Baltic states.
China considers Taiwan to be part of China, not to mention the South China Sea.
May you live in interesting times.(Old Chinese curse).

Bellingcat told us.

There's no real comparison between China/Taiwan and Russia/Ukraine.

China/Taiwan is more comparable to North/South Korea, East/West Germany (1945-91) or North/South Vietnam (1949-1975), where a war has ended in a position where there has been a partition that divided one people into two countries.

Ukraine has been part of lots of different empires over the centuries and most of its people are distinct from Russians - different language, culture etc. The same applies to Georgia, Moldova and the Baltic states.
