Russian invasion of Ukraine

So he had no right to give Hitler the green light to invade the Sudetenland. Worse, the British and French negotiators gave the Czechs a absolute promise not to give in to German demands, then reneged on it.
Where did he give him the green light? Chaimberlain declared war as soon as Hitler invaded. You’ve got to choose your battles, mate.

What alternative was there? Neither Britain nor France were remotely prepared for a war at that time, France was overrun with alarming ease a year or so later, and the Britain sent packing from Dunkirk after fielding a completely out-gunned expeditionary force. Had Germany invaded even at that time never mind in 1938 we would be speaking Deutsch right now.

However immoral it may appear 80 years later, it was the right thing to do for the country at the time as history can testify

I think Chainberlain gets an unfair press. He needed to stall for time. I don’t think for a minute he felt he’d secured peace in our time. He knew exactly what Hitler was, but wasn’t holding any cards.
We transformed our armaments capacity in the year after the “Munich agreement”. We desperately needed that year.

You are mixing up two different invasions. Chamberlain declared war on the invasion of Poland, a year later. Read a decent account of the Munich Conference 1938 and weep at our trickery against the Czechs.
EDIT PS. @flook above is correct.

Sorry, you’re right, but my overarching point remains. He did what he had to do. It’s a murky business.

The arguments put forward about military readiness are correct, but we should, therefore, never have given the Czechs that promise. We even engineered the Czech absence from the session where we resiled from our position, so they were presented with a fait accomplit.
Chamberlain‘s “peace in our time” speech should have said “We have fucked the Czechs so Hitler has promised not to invade anywhere else.”
Despite our lack of military readiness in 1938, it is doubtful that Germany would have invaded us then. Apart from having to watch their back, they would have had to invade and subdue France and set up base there from which to launch air strikes and naval war before an invasion of Britain was feasible.
