Day 172 (August 14) mainly, but also day 171 (August 13) of Russia's war on Ukraine
Long summary:
1) Slovakia sent four 155 mm Zuzana self-propelled howitzers to Ukraine. This is a long-range (39 km), accurate, and rapidly-firing self-propelled howitzer. It uses NATO-standard ammunition.
None of the Russian howitzers have a range greater than 25 km, and most Russian howitzers have an effective range no greater than 15 to 20 km. Plus, most Russian howitzers stay at at their position for a long time. It should therefore be possible for machines like the Slovakian Zuzana to destroy Russian howitzers if they are dedicated to that task.
2) Ukraine's HIMARS hit the Antonivskyi Bridge multiple times over the last two days.
3) Ukraine's HIMARS hit the railroad nexus in occupied Melitopol. Most of the supplies going to occupied Kherson go through this railroad nexus.
4) Ukraine's HIMARS hit the Wagner mercenary headquarters in the Donbas.
5) There were two Russian ground attacks in the vicinity of Izium. They both failed to advance.
6) There were two Russian ground attacks west of Lysychansk. They both failed to advance.
7) There were two Russian ground attacks along the line drawn from Bakhmut to Lysychansk. They both failed to advance.
8) There was one Russian ground attack by the Wagner mercenaries on Bakhmut. If it advanced, it was a very small advance.
9) There were three Russian ground attacks by the Wagner mercenaries along the line from Bakhmut to Travneve. They all failed to advance.
9) There was one Russian ground attack on the village of New York, just north of the city of Donetsk. It failed to advance.
10) There were six Russian ground attacks by the approximately six Russian brigades (11th, 60th, 5th, 100th, 61st, and 136th) that are in the city of Donetsk on the Ukrainian trenches outside of Donetsk city. They all failed to advance on the 14th day of August. But on the 13th day of August the Russian forces took most of the rest of the town of Pesky. As of yesterday, this is the eighteenth day of an extremely intense bombardment followed by ground assaults on the Ukrainian fortifications outside of Donetsk. The Russians are using jets, artillery shells at a staggering number per day, rockets, and thermobaric munitions to kill the Ukrainians and destroy their defensive fortifications.
11) There was one Russian ground attack on the village of Pavlivka, south of the city of Donetsk. It failed to advance.
12) There was one Russian ground attack on the town of Velyka Novosilka. It failed to advance. Velyka Novosilka, and Pavlivka, are in the Zaporizhzhia Province.
13) Everywhere else, and including on the northern border, it's artillery, missiles, mortar fire, drones, assaults by Russian jets and sometimes helicopter assaults, but no Russian ground attacks.
