Not sure I agree with that.Careful with what you wish for. Putin's war started out as, supposedly, a short military action to 'liberate Russians who wanted some reunification with their 'home nation'. It's gone badly wrong for both sides, Ukraine has seen thousands of its peoples lives or livelihoods destroyed. Russia has seen the humiliation of it's army, but, it is still there. The only way out now for Putin is for NATO provided weaponry to hit his troops on Russia itself. He will then be able to claim to his trusting Russian public that NATO is the aggressor, seeking to destroy his country and that threat can only be met by his forces using the big one.
Putin, if inclined I believe, would use nukes without first justifying himself to the Russian populus. Personally, I don't think he would use them against NATO even if Russian soil was being targeted by Ukraine.
If Putin wants an out, he could withdraw his troops claiming he met his objectives.
Russia has however, alienated itself from the majority of the world for decades to come.
