Russian invasion of Ukraine

SURPRISE!!

The sanctions don't start for at least 4 weeks. If ever.

in the short term the Trump administration has actually helped Russia. It has provided a four week grace period for foreign companies to buy as much Russian oil as they possibly can, safe in the knowledge that the earliest they can conceivably be sanctioned by the USA is 21 November.

You don’t think he’s capable of making g such a threat?
Interjecting here to say this:
He is capable. But it would defeat Putin's very own policy of persuading the west that he could, and to lmit weapons supplies to Ukraine.
With such a direct threat it would remove ANY doubt that Ukraine is not Putins final objective and the West would mobilise to counter this threat - fully providing Ukraine with sufficient arms and ammunition to continue as the first bastion of defence against Russia.
It would totally destroy carefully laid strategies to untangle Ukraine from the defence of the West.

These sanctions should have started in February 2022, it’s crazy we are nearly four years into this war and the West still has levers it can pull in regards to sanctions.

Sanctions have to evolve to combat workarounds so putting all on in one go would still mean more to follow.
Doesn’t excuse Trump though for giving Putin a window of opportunity for these latest US ones

Would bet large sums that either these sanctions are never implemented, or never enforced.

Agree. Surely Ukraine would be better off fucking Trump off altogether as, as it is, Trump is no friend or ally. In fact, I would say he is an enemy.

At least they would be able to operate with some level of certainty.
The US is the largest supporter of Ukraine. Fucking Trump off is a non-starter.

Instead, the better path, is to butter-up Trump - stating that Ukraine adores him - and is actively pushing for his award of the Noble Peace Prize.

Sadly, this is bang on. Hence the appalling but effective (or as effective as it can be) obsequiousness of Rutte, Zelensky and Starmer.

Key is not to rely on it continuing, but build capability independent of the orange fascist.

All that smooching has been done and he still favours Putin.

Trump said yesterday he wants Zelensky to be reasonable and concede territory

And yet... how is this accomplished?
Via deals like the Saab one, I think? But consistently and at scale.
We've come a long way already - as I understand it (which could be wrong...) the US is not funding any military aid at all any more, Europe is purchasing US kit and supplying European kit.

As Europe is funding this, there's every incentive to source from Europe too, which will build capability further.

Europe/UK is already on a powerful way to take control of their own security w/o any US support, in all areas. Takes time, logically.

Germany alone is coming from a defence budget of €50bn and will reach over €150bn per year in 2029. Sure, making up tons of leeway after decades of peace and happiness. Also boosting troops with lots of new infrastructure and staff costs. But the direction is clear and there's no way back.
