Anyone else find it incredible that the Russian Air force doesn't have control of the skies after a year of war. The Ukrainians can still put up fighter jets. Why have the Russians wasted all those missiles on civilians when surely ukrainian airfields would have been a better target?

You look at previous conflicts like the Gulf War and Afghanistan. They wouldn’t let the tanks and troops engage until they had taken out the enemies capability from the air. When this kicked off last February I was expecting to see Russian jets and bombers blitzing Kyiv directly above. The air defences each side has are extremely powerful which turns any sortie into enemy airspace a risky strategy, probably why Russia chooses to fire long range cruise missiles.

If Ukraine is provided with fighters planes, it will give them the capability to support the tanks they are getting with ordinance from above which could break the lines where this conflict has turned into a stalemate.

The issue the Ruskies have is that Ukraine has proven time and time again they have the capability to bring aircraft out of the sky with modern StA missiles
