Russian invasion of Ukraine

If it ends in a draw, Russia wins. Not something to hold rallies over but they would have achieved some success.
Depends on your definition of winning.

Sweden and Finland in NATO, whatever remains of Ukraine too - ostracised and isolated in Europe, military capability depleted, half a million dead, sanctions maintained, huge economic impact (the latter three of which will hugely accentuate Russia’s manifest demographic issues) international standing hugely diminished - and huge problems with insurrection in whatever they hold…doesn’t look much like winning to me.

That's if you believe the bullshit about Russia feeling threatened by NATO.

I don't and never have. The war was about stopping Ukraine tilting west and then punishing them for doing so. It's come at heavy cost to Russia but also Ukraine. There was obviously a point where Putin's grip on power could have vanished and the Russian elites could have ended up forming a synchronised defenestration troupe.

But the mad chef failed.

Ukraine won't be taking back their land and other countries or Russian republics looking to either tilt west or gain more autonomy or even independence know the high cost.

Putin isn't looking out for Russia's interests, it's only about keeping his grip on power alive. A police state probably ensures he'll be head of state even after his death.

Well they haven't "titled" towards russia, which putin wanted.

Sadly I agree with this, though I don't see putin trying to take anywhere else in the medium term, they've bitten off far more than they can chew here.

There was never any doubt about that, not after the three day war failed anyway.

What do you mean when you say ‘Russia‘?

The Russian people or Putin? Or something else?

The Russian people are brainwashed imbeciles and alcoholics so they'd probably feel threatened by little green men if Putin's TV Talking heads told them to.

Hard to get into the mindset of the mad midget. I doubt he felt directly threatened in military terms. Probably threatened by the the prospect of regime change due to increasing westernisation in Eastern Europe. It's ultimately the same reason why he props up the Lukashenko.

Probably has regular therapy sessions about his nightmares of being strung up like Ceausescu following a popular revolt.

The oligarchs wouldn't have felt threatened as they spent half their time in the West and put much of their wealth there.

Don't think the military top brass were threatened either.

Do you think any of those groupings are happy about Sweden and Finland being in NATO?
