I suspect he was naive enough to believe that Putin would let him ‘retire’ outside Russia and live in luxury in return for turning around and pledging support for him.

And in fairness, had he actually gone into exile he might have gotten a few years out of it before some poisoned boxer shorts turned up. Flying back to Russia shortly after was an insane decision.
 
Several post-Soviet republics have dramatically increased exports to Russia after its invasion of Ukraine sparked a global trade and sanctions backlash against Moscow, the RBC news website reported Wednesday.

Citing foreign and UN Comtrade data, the outlet reported Belarus, Kazakhstan, Armenia,Georgia and Kyrgyzstan exported $9.4 billion worth of goods to Russia in March-June 2022 — a 15% increase from March-June 2021.

The five countries, which have generally friendly ties with Russia, comprise the Moscow-led trade bloc called the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU), meaning they share unified tariffs.

Putin seems very sane to me. Ruthless, but sane. Still in power, threats to his power less than ever.

The nuclear threats serve a couple of purposes:
(1) to shore up his image at home as a man of great power
(2) to frighten naive westerners into weakening their support for Ukraine

They're not real; actually launching nuclear weapons would result in the loss of his power.
