BATTLE FOR KHARKIV’S LIPTSY SALIENT INTENSIFIES
Ukraine constantly harasses the Russian supply lines both inside the salient and in Russia with endless attacks from drones.
They also push hard against Russian lines with some success, notably to the western end.
Meanwhile the Russians try to distract the Ukrainian forces by pressing them elsewhere along the frontline here. However this runs up against the elite Ukrainian drone unit Magyars Birds. They’re taken so seriously by Ukraine that they have now become the 414th Marine Strike UAV Battalion.
The Russians are frankly, terrified of the Ukrainian drone operations on this front. The 414th is relentless and leaves nobody standing. The intensity of drone operations is so great the Russians find it psychologically debilitating because the ever present threat wears them down. Just the sound is enough to cause panic - there have even been reports and at least one verified video of soldiers out in the open killing themselves, rather than be maimed by a drone attack.
One Russian report published on Telegram always that as soon as the crossed into Ukraine, drones were on them. This inside the occupied area and already drones were waiting. Picking off everyone as fast as they could.
It demonstrates extremely tight control of the air space over the Russian held positions.
Another example of Russian military lies to recruits was that there was virtually no Ukrainian presence in the occupied areas and they should act accordingly. It took them just minutes to find out the truth - for which they clearly weren’t prepared.
Bearing in mind the range of operations being around 20km, the Russian anti-drone jammers and guns were apparently described as completely ineffective. Not only did the Ukrainians manage to operate so far from their base, said the Russian, but they chased them down into an underground pipe they tried to hide in.
Such capabilities suggest that a larger signal repeater and booster drone is operating with the swarms to enable them to stay linked to their operator.
Personally I’ve become fascinated by this technology and have been using some of my free time to learn how this is done and I operate several drones now. It’s all about practice of course - mastering controls and understanding the drone’s sensitivity and capabilities. I’m beginning to understand the art of it and my respect for the operators magnifies with every report I read.
The Russian telegram report describes how they tried to hide in trees, underground and anywhere they could, but drones always found them.
If drones didn’t get them then Ukrainian artillery did, guided in by the drones.
The war between the drones and the jammers is endless. The Russians are good at EW but it takes weeks if not months to develop a new jammer, design it and produce it, only to find after a temporary break in intensity the Ukrainians have found a way around it. Indeed as is so often the case, the drones are used up so fast that a new generation with new adaptations is in the field sometimes within days, so quickly do the Ukrainians produce them. It’s a cat and mouse game that the defence can barely keep up with. The cats are few and the mice are many.
Unquestionably Ukraine can teach us all in the west about drones and drone warfare - yet there seems to be a reluctance to take the lessons on board. Without the live experience it’s not having the impact in western military leaders minds it should have. It’s such a fast evolving technology that nobody seems to grasp quite how it affects our forces - especially when there’s no defence against them.
The Russians have come up with one strategy - although it’s less about drone avoidance than a response to the loss of so many IFV/APC type vehicles. The use of fast cross country bikes imported from China is seen as mine, drone and artillery avoiding, especially for getting assault groups quickly to front lines. So much so that recent information is that some CONT…
CONTINUES ….
Brigades are establishing motorbike schools for Russian troops on a pilot basis.
If it’s deemed successful then it will be made a formal specialist operation and rolled out army-wide. Necessity is the mother of invention. Turning a weakness into a strength at this speed is also only possible in war.
Overall Ukraine has demonstrated its drone dominance - the 414th was deemed so successful that it’s been moved where it’s needed more.
Again, the Russians don’t get it all their own way.
Sadly though I have to report that the Robotyne salient won at such cost a year ago has almost entirely been retaken by Russian forces, as has Klieshievka and Uruzhaine. The battles continue to rage all along the front. The fight is hard .
