I suspect they are mercenaries if they are North Koreans.

North Korea has previously sent indentured workers to Russia to work in logging and other industries to earn Korea a source of foreign currency/cash.

I was genuinely interested in your answer to my question though, nobody else on the board is able to offer the same perspective of what PRC would do if NK was attacked.

North Korea is the only one country who has a "Military Alliance Treaty" with China.
I think if that happens, PRC will defend NK.
I don't know...Can't remember more details.
