Russian invasion of Ukraine

Ukraine intelligence is convinced Russia will attack in the new year.
Could still be nationalistic posturing on both sides. Russia needs smokescreens at the moment, they're seeing over 1,000 deaths per day on COVID and no matter how much gas they sell to the EU, the rouble is so low at the minute that they barely make any money from it. Putin needs a situation where a high level of threat remains on that gas supply but a war would stop it completely and there goes the income.

I still don't think that Russia can afford a war, they certainly can't afford a lengthy one which Ukraine will certainly be compared to the smaller annexed portion of Crimea. This is also under the sanctions that will inevitably follow from the west, it'd sink them.

Putin calling Biden tomorrow to request NATO don't move any further east.

Would that be his justification to go into Ukraine in the new year?

Getting a bit heavy now
I was watching Threads on You Tube the other day
1984 and still disturbing
This situation is very tense

I'm guessing that Russia won't invade the Ukraine.

Putin is all about remaining in power and expanding Russia's influence. Should he invade Ukraine - probably a popular action amongst Russians - mass causalities will likely ensue. On top of that, economic sanctions from the West will result; in a few years, Putin's popularity might plummet and he could possibly lose power.

In all, an invasion is too risky. Meanwhile, amass troops on Ukraine's borders, and rattle the sabre - popular among Russians, relatively risk free - and who knows, maybe something in Putin's favor results.
