Russian invasion of Ukraine

Fucking hilarious when cunts ignore the issue of sanctions, when coming up with putative solutions to the situation in Ukraine, when it’s absolutely front and centre to any meaningful outcome.

It’s like picking a football team, but only selecting six players, missing the goalkeeper and defenders off. It doesn’t matter how good your midfield and attack is, over 90 minutes you are getting beat.

How Trump deals with the sanctions against Russia will certainly be interesting. When people talk of Russia not being ‘seen to win’ they are probably the most effective tool left. I therefore fully expect he’ll lift them tout suite.

I'd be astonished if Trump doesn't just lift sanctions, but positively drive US/Russia economic ties.

Of course, I', often wrong!

I think people need to get their heads around the fact that Trump's main priority is re-establishing good US/Russia relations. It would help you understand Trump's actions now and likely attitude towards sanctions. The geopolitical reasons for this are worthy of their own thread.

I’ve already indicated along these lines in the last sentence of the post you quoted. It’s obvious he wants to improve relations with Russia. That is manifest from his words and deeds, both recently and historically.

And sanctions will unquestionably be part of the tools he deploys to effectuate that.

So I’m not entirely sure what I need to understand further?

Russian trade was predominantly with China, then Europe before the current sanctions post invasion. US trade was on a par with the Netherlands.

The US can make an effort, but China/Europe are two enormous trading blocs on their doorstep and China right now has Russia by the economic balls. Also, US policy can flip on an election. We wouldn’t trust the Americans long term or even medium term, so neither will the Russians and certainly not at the expense of China.

A better question is WHY Trump thinks he needs better relations.

They shouldn’t be paying the US anything. The aid wasn’t given contingent on natural resources going the other way and so that should be the starting point.

I think Europe will need to quickly appreciate that it cannot trust anything this US administration says, included in which is Article 5, and should deal with accordingly.

I'd heard Zelensky had said that, and don't see a reason that it's not true.

I was thinking of the entertainment value in TrumPutin wanting the money but having to deal with where it was coming from, rather than the arrangements to date.

It’s odd that the Americans never seem to recall the only time article 5 was ever invoked…..

I think most members who follow or write on this thread will already have deduced Trump is seeking better relations with Putin.
However, it seems to go hand in hand with his apparent willingness to throw Ukraine under a bus and drive divisions with some powerful European countries.

I think he will but I’m hoping it won’t really matter as the rest of us won’t lift them and we may even go in harder on them.

Trump will then spend the week calling us silly names no doubt.
