Ryan Bertrand

Silva is indisputably world-class and whether he'd get into Madrid's team is up for speculation but not sure how that's at all relevant.

Bertrand would be a good buy as rotation and for cup games, but as our first-choice left back would be disappointing. Not a huge upgrade on Clichy. Mendy is worth spending the extra 5m for

He would be a huge upgrade on Clichy, going forward. Further he can play in a back three and provide cover for our left sided CB too.

He's a clear Kolarov replacement/upgrade and if people can't see that he's obviously not being targeted as a first choice LB, that's their problem.

Kolarov isn't leaving this summer so I don't think he's his replacement. But as I said, if he is being brought in as cover for left-back and for left sided CB then sure he'd be a good signing. I haven't seen anything concrete to suggest he's a backup option beyond posts in this forum so concerns that we've dropped out of searching Mendy and Sandro are valid

Absolutely. We're at the start of probably the best transfer window ever, still the majority is moaning. Bertrand would be a wonderful acquisition, he's the best homegrown LB that we could get: Shaw is impossible, Rose is a crock. The only good alternative to Bertrand that I know is Sociedad's Berchiche, but favouring an experienced English player is logical.
And of course Bertrand isn't going to be our only LB, we'll get a top talent like Sandro or Mendy soon. Those who think that 20m for him is too much should bear in mind that we're paying for a player + free foreign spot which is alone worth this money.

People should get a grip, right now City's transfer dealings are nothing short of brilliant.
Same applies to our supposed 'failings' with VVD and A.Sanchez - they are good but not that good, we can do even better. PL players tend to be overrated on BM.

Bertrand is world class (until he signs for Liverpool and we realize he's shit and never wanted him anyway)!

Just a genuine question. I see many people demanding we sign Mendy and that Bertrand is not good enough. How many times have people watched these players for a full match. Do people genuinely believe they have watched enough games over say the past 2 years to make an assessment?

And what makes you think he's correct on this?

Maybe we're in for him, maybe we aren't. It's hard to put much faith in those in the media when it comes to transfers. They get more wrong than right.

Having said that. I would be happy if it was true. He's a decent player.

A few things:

1. What he said was corroborated by Marti Perarnau, a legit Guardiola insider who has access to our transfer targets list.
2. It doesn't make any sense that City would back out at a 40m asking price for Mendy. That price is to be expected and he's our top priority at the slot. We have the resources to pull it off without question.
3. It's still early in the window.
4. We were always going to target two fullbacks on each side as we have no suitable cover there in our squad as it stands. This has been talked about for some time by various reputable sources and even hinted to by Guardiola.

I agree that it makes sense in some ways as we have just released 3 full backs. My point was more why do you think it has more validity because Sam Lee said it.

I'd be surprised if Bertrand would be willing to come as back up though and I'd also be surprised if we were targeting 4 full backs. Personally I can see 2 or 3 maximum and then using the squad (such as Fernandinho/Kolarov) as back up options.

Most fans can watch a you tube compilation and have then seen enough to judge. If they need validation they have gary and motd .

Is he a player you can rely on if you need him to start a Champions League final?

His Champs League medal could suggest so?

People thought Alex Sandro was the type player you describe, yet he was dog shit the other night

Let's look at consistency rather than a one off - is he the sort of player we can rely on away at Arsenal and Liverpool?

I am perfectly fine with Bertrand. He might be the 3rd best Left Back in the PL. Not a bad option for a (back-up)?

Sam's got a decent enough relationship with the club and has some very good sources in Spain as well as England.

Obviously Marti said yesterday that City want Bertrand and Mendy. There's plenty of logic to that. Not sure that strictly speaking that makes one of them "back up" anymore than B. Silva is back up for David Silva. They'll both play loads and if I were a betting man I'd say precisely because of Bertrand's age and experience he'd start the season and Mendy would get eased in.

People forget how raw Mendy is. 12 months ago Marseille let him go for peanuts because of his off field issues and general attitude.

Who's the second best? Rose would be #1, but after that...?

Unless you mean Mendy would be in the top 2 and we'd have 2 of the 3 best LB's in the league? Which I'd probably agree with and sounds pretty good when written down like that.

Second would be Alonso for me, unless you count him as Midfielder because of his advanced positioning in the 343 system. In that regard yes that would make Bertrand the second best.
