Saints (A) Post Match Thread

Gundogan is creative as well as KDB and Foden has potential. Bernardo also creates.
I agree some players are out of form but other than another striker I think we already have the players to take us back to the top or thereabouts. There’s no way we will be funded for or need a major rebuild.
Won’t happen.
Our attack is no where near good enough , we basically don't have a striker, Mahrez is not a good fit in our team, Sterling a shadow of himself and Torres great potential but not as a first team regular.

Vital 3 points and as you say against a decent side in form. I had a feeling we would pull something out of the embers in this one and keep on track.
Not sure what the break after boxing day is don't we have the blue dippers on the 28th followed by another big test away at Chelsea?
The defence is now solid and the gap still manageable 8/5 points but a lot more than what we witnessed yesterday will be required to win the big race.
Not directly after boxing day but Everton on Monday 28th then no game till the Sunday which for this season is a break compared to the usual playing every 3 days then it's a week till the Birmingham game. The players look really fatigued to me.

Good game and great result. A few people getting carried away again though, same as after Burnley and Fulham. Our finishing was comical at times, and must improve. Next few weeks vital.

A top striker who would create fear in defences would give a serious focal point in our attacking.

Lets be honest Jesus coming deep, playing with his back to the goal a lot and being offside quite often while not a clinical top class finisher when he has some chances he aint someone who are making defenders having nightmares.

If we had someone just like Vardy couple year back, or Kane who are both dominant strikers can win headers in the box, can score from outside the box, can be fox in the box etc.
(Let alone Haaland....)

We have Kun who is on the decline for obvious reasons, he aint have much left at top class football, and his injuries seemingly stop him to get 100% fit for months now.

Even if Kun can deliver 90 minutes for us soon we can safely say that he will not be a 100% top of ability neither fitness wise. I think he is going down the same route as Kompany, still world class but his body is just struggling to stay fit or even get 100% fit.

We tried Sterling, Mahrez, Torres in central forward role recent months, none if them are really good there. Neither is Jesus imo, a striker in our system could flourish but Jesus is not the guy who will deliver 20+ goals in PL for us. Kun also is not that guy anymore unfortunately given his fitness issues.

Having a top class finisher who instill fear in defences could give more confidence to wide players, midfielders even full backs to create more chances for him, while could take extra focus from opponents freeing up focus for others.

At the risk of pointing out the obvious, we have played most games this season WITHOUT A STRIKER due to injuries and lack of fitness. Ask yourself where spurs would be without Son and Kane and dippers minus Sala and Mane.
That is the prime reason we are struggling to score and will improve once we get Kun and Jesus properly back.
Defensively we are much stronger which really pleases me.
Circumstances dictate our lack of goals and it’s pointless blaming managers.
We are creating chances by the cartload and as long as we continue to do that I am sure the conversion rate will improve with the return of our forwards.
No need for panic!
Very good post. If Kane/Son and Mane/Salah were missing from their teams it would be a massive blow.

My worry throughout the game was that if they had scored, we would have had a problem. In the WBA game if we had managed to score 2 or 3 goals then their goal wouldn't have created an issue for us but it seems we are unable to score more than 1 goal in most games these days

Leed 1-1
Westham 1-1
WBA 1-1
Liverpool 1-1
Man U - 0-0

Then the Wins

Arsenal - 1-0
Sotons 1-0
Sheffield 1-0

Only three games where we scored more than 1 goal are Wolves, Burnely and Fulham (bar the Foxes game where we lost)

We really don't need a world class striker, we just need any striker who can score right now. Be in the right positions and give the opposition defense a problem. I wonder if Delap was 19 or 20, would Pep have called him to lead our attack?
If you're good enough - you're old enough...
