Scariest away day following City

Leeds away in 95 or 96, Gerry Creaney scored for us. We had to walk in complete silence to the train station which aroused suspicion. One guy kept turning round and and sniffing then said "I can smell mancs". We were certain we were gonna get it. Made it to the train station in one piece and then, when we thought we were clear, we spotted a few lads looking in the station pub, they walked out and then all of a sudden all we heard was "we are Leeds" before they came steaming in and went for anyone in the pub, including women.

Absolute fuckers, only lasted about 30 seconds but they left a scene of carnage and crying women.
Can remember that match.night game ? 1nil win.hsd to walk back to station past the terraced houses down thru the park..long scary walk with a couple of Blues for company.
Bin Elland rd loads of times but 1st time was the worse,on my own 87-88 season...lost 1nil,my 2nd ever away game, naive decision, didnt go to well...ended up on their kop behind the goal, pay on the gate as it was in those days....

I was in the Main stand at Bradford that day..can remember looking to my left at terrace behind the goal when it kicked off as you described...a fairly large group of City had bunched together in the top left hand corner of the terrace...and this group became isolated as the home fans backed off around them after City started fighting back....that day was mental, lots going off .

Yes great day. I stayed overnight in Bradford as I was living in Dover at the time and had a great time. I was lucky didn't have a sniff of trouble myself but I know others weren't so lucky.

I hsd no trouble at all was drinking in tbeir supporters club before the game.

Although Nicholls would disagree, must be one of a few authors who didn't rate City for some reason.
he's an author and a good mate to some of united's older lot. united always had the numbers but i would sooner go old trafford than maine road anyday. not only did you have to contend with the alley's round the ground you also had the walk back through moss side.

Probably same game mate,

It was a Saturday game mate so couldn't have been night, it was bollock cold though and pitch black when we left the stadium so probably dec/Jan. I was only in my early twenties so it all seemed like a big adventure until leaving the ground.....

Yes he seems to be mates with bucket head, Tony O'Neil. In truth every away ground could be dodgy back on n the day, even some small place you least expected.

I've not read the whole thread but had some great, exhilarating, frightening experiences watching City away, one that sticks in my mind was 1983 Cardiff away on the August bank holiday.

We got an early service train from Manchester, probably about 150 lads, we got off the train at Newport for a few pints early doors, we were just having a laugh when someone ran in and said the Welsh were outside, we all ran out, word at got around and a massive mob of Welsh not sure if Newport or Cardiff were trying to get at the pub, glasses/bottles and anything were exchanged with the welsh police doing there best to keep us apart, they eventually moved them down the road then emptied us back into the station for our train to Cardiff, that was just a taster of things to come.

We got off the train at the side of Ninian Park, just remember it wasn't like a proper station with just a cinder path leading down to the main road, we were all patting ourselves on the back about how well we had performed half an hour earlier, what was waiting for us at the bottom of that path will stay with me for the rest of my life, there was hundreds if not thousands of them waiting for us, they weren't just football lads, grown men, farmers, miners the lot, there was a used car garage on the other side of the road and they were stood on the cars, the valleys must of been empty, you could see the hatred in them, we tried to hang back on the path for our own safety, but the welsh police went full anti English, remember one of them saying " you wanted it you English bastards, now your gonna get it"

We got onto the road and turned left towards the ground, next thing it was like Rourkes Drift in reverse, the police just let them steam in, we just had our backs to the wall wind milling and kicking where possible, but we came un stuck big time, was gutted I had a brand new Jaegar jacket on and it was ripped to shreds, after what felt like a 10 minute fee for all the police decided to move in and escort us to the ground.

All through the match they were trying to break the police lines, we were kept in after the game and bricks were being launched into the ground, the City end was silent when a City fan stood on a barrier and played the last post on a mouth organ and a few nervous laughs broke out. We got escorted back to the station and jumped on the match day special which got bricked and got back to manchester minus a few windows.

Me mums cousin had The Garratt in town many years ago, I'd arranged to meet one of my mates in there late on a Saturday night after an away game, got there plenty of utds lads in. About an hour later City turned up started putting the windows through to get them outside. They didn't fancy it that night, neither did i to be honest just hid behind the bar.

Utd used to drink in the Grey Parrot in Hulme, Mally had it at the time, they would walk down in numbers on derby day. Town was always a leveller later on when the none locals had fucked off.
