Was the Chesterfield game a play off semi final mate, used to know a few of the old Chesterfield lot, had quite a reputation in the lower leagues for a number of years.Lower league clubs could spring all sorts of surprises, I went to plenty of aways with Stockport over the years and got in all manner of scrapes, Chesterfield, Lincoln, Exeter, Darlo to name but a few, then there was the likes of Stoke, Burnley, Wolves to contend with when they came down in the basement league.
Remember coming back from away games in the 70s off the train at piccadilly, there would be that many rags waiting on Piccadilly approach the coppers would escort us out the back way, so you not only had a rough away day but you had the rags to deal with. One year coming back from stoke our train pulled in as the cockney reds were getting on train out across the platform absolute chaos.
Yes looking back you could never relax after a game as you were likely to bump into a mob or small group of other fans almost anywhere.
I remember one time many years ago the rags had played Chelsea at home. I lived in Wythenshawe at the time and I was waiting on Altrincham road for the 371 bus to Altrincham at about 19:10. This was a good two hours after the game. The stop was near the Royal Thorn pub. A minibus pulled into the carpark and about eight lads got out, all in donkey jackets and docs. I guesses they were Chelsea fans and said this to the bloke at the bus stop with me. I had got to know him over a couple of years as he always caught the same time bus as me. Anyway the Chelsea fans all walk past us at the bus stop giving us the once over and saying, "Alright mate?" as they passed. They stopped just past the stop and I heard one say, " Nah leave him he's with his dad." They then all trooped past again and went into the pub. Later the next day I heard they had smashed it up and put a lad I know in a coma. My cousin drinking with him had stitches in her hand from a broken glass. A lucky escape for me and an example of how it could be back then.

I went to Harrogate v Darlo couple of years back ..same faces,loyal following....one of ne mates is a life long fan.
Came across them on more than one occasion and yes they were a tidy set, the semi I think you refer to was at theirs on a Sunday, pretty sure it was something like an 11.30 kick off, plenty of mither after the game, also seen them turn up at Stockport in good numbers a few seasons before, think they had already won promotion, big battle on the Armoury roundabout. My first experience of Chesterfield was back in the 70's when City played them away in the cup, must've been League cup as it was a night game, don't recall any major trouble, City swamped the ground, I was in the wooden main stand, strange old stand that was.

It was huge. As I knew people in there I know what happened. The Chelsea fans were playing up all night and one give Terry Brieleys younger brother a dig. He phoned Terry he was a big name in Wythenshawe at the time. He got an iron bar, rounded up a few lads, went down and it erupted. The lad who got put in a coma was a Scotch lad called Billy Stewart who was an ex of my sister.
I'm sure a coach load of Chelsea got a kicking in the benchill pub in the 70s.
Ha ha well they sure chose the wrong pub to play up in!
