UEFA have released their response.

This is actually insane:

When such a malfunction of the system occurs, the IFAB protocol allows for the VAR to describe to the referee what can be seen on the TV replay(s) but not tell him the decision that should be taken. The referee then makes a final decision based on his own perception and the information received orally from the VAR.

Will UEFA be big enough to admit that, in hindsight, it was invalid? Will they fcuk as like.
This is the bit that’s now annoying me some 20 hours later. Last week UEFA issued a statement to explain the reasoning behind the VAR decisions in the Madrid/Ajax game and they made sense and it seemed more or less transparent.

So far, not a peep out of them about the handball (which I agreed with at first as I thought it was one), but now appears to me to have been a violation of their own rules on how VAR should be implemented.

Where’s the mea cupla from UEFA or are they just hoping it goes away?

Edit. Oh hang on. Seems they have in the post above. I’ll give it a read.

And how do we know that there wasn't someone screaming down the line to the ref; "give the fucking penalty, or you'll be back reffing the Hyde 'B' division womens' league at Hough End on a pissing wet sunday morning", eh?

Ok from the statement. Two things. First, I agree regarding the laws of the game and the offside/foul by Dinho and said as much last night. This part:

“The second decision was also correctly made on the basis of the Laws of the Game (Law 11 – Offside) which stipulates: “if a player in an offside position is moving towards the ball with the intention of playing the ball and is fouled before playing or attempting to play the ball, or challenging an opponent for the ball, the foul is penalised as it has occurred before the offside offence”.

Secondly, this next one is fucking ridiculous:

“When such a malfunction of the system occurs, the IFAB protocol allows for the VAR to describe to the referee what can be seen on the TV replay(s) but not tell him the decision that should be taken. The referee then makes a final decision based on his own perception and the information received orally from the VAR.”

The VAR ‘described’ what fucking happened to the ref and the ref overruled himself!?? Fuck off. That’s beyond idiotic.

He also booked Otamendi,.from that description.

UEFA seem happy enough though.

That sounds like something from a Donald Trump press conference. So someone describes what happens in the refs ear but doesn’t tell him what to do? Does anyone at UEFA have any credibility or common sense - what a self indulgent, self serving, idiotic organisation they are.

In true Uefa style - when there’s an issue - just make up another rule to cover it. They have an answer for everything - or at least they think they do.

Did you really expect any different from them? if VAR system was not fully operational it should have been scrapped last night, can you imagine this happening during a RM,Barca,Bayern game? it's only us so they made a complete mockery of it,thankfully the lads were determined to win

I know you’re passionate about your football and opinions and I’m the same and we both call it as we see it and I believe we’ve both been honest in expressing our thoughts etc but I have to say that explanation fucking stinks.

The fact he’s changed his mind and awarded a pen and a yellow “without being told what to do” and from having the replay “described” to him.... it isn’t even a joke. It’s so far beyond parody that it’s not even funny.

I still think it’s a penalty but the ref shouldn’t have given it in 1,000 years based on what actually went on. The fact Uefa have doubled down and are patting themselves on the back for it shows that in its current incarnation, VAR is open to abuse and not fit for service. They’ll make up any old shit to justify the decisions they choose.
