Scholes, ITV disgrace

Was at the game last night so I didn't hear anything Scholes said. Did he say anything other than the truth about the atmosphere and the poor attendance?

Call me old-fashioned but football pundits should stick to talking about football. If someone associated with United is going to do a hatchet job on our fans and take the piss out of our atmosphere (or lack thereof) and empty seats live on national TV then ITV may as well invite some of the posters from Red Cafe on rather than Paul Fucking Scholes. Flip this round 180 degrees - can you imagine a scenario where a former City player is on the panel for a CL game involving United at Old Trafford and then running off at the mouth about the fact that if United didn't force every single one of their 55,000 season ticket holders to buy a ticket for their CL home fixtures there would actually be a shit load more empty seats than there were at our place last night? Me neither. United fans can call Summerbee a bitter twat or whatever but at least he sticks to matters on the pitch and would never get involved with criticising their support even if there was a justifiable reason to do so.

Ok, but let's remember that teams like Liverpool and Chelsea have huge global support that we don't.

Despite what the club spout about being a global brand, in terms of supporters that go to games, we are still a local club with only local support to call on.

We are not a huge, dare I say massive, club, with fans coming from all over the world to watch us.

I was, like you, at the game tonight, and while most of the people around me were not the seasoncard holders I usually say hello to, the ones I spoke to had local accents.

It may seem pathetic that you had rows of empty seats in front of you, but those seats are not going to be filled by legions of fans spread around the world coming to watch us. They were empty because our largely local support simply can't afford to go to every game we play at home.

There are enough threads on the subject of unaffordable tickets in this forum written by local people who are pissed off they can't afford to watch City as much as they used to for that to be understandable.

I work at Manchester airport, and I can tell you there is no shortage of supporters of United and Liverpool jetting in every time they play, whatever the competition is, even the Capital One cup..

You wouldn't even know City were playing given the lack of supporters passing through when we are at home.

I think the club is trying to run before before it can walk at the moment with regard to ticket prices, and I think that was reflected in the attendance tonight.

We are not as big a club as those that run the club think we are, and we won't be for quite some time.

Our largely local support can't afford it!

^^ Agree with this, look guys we have the support to easily fill a 60k stadium but we do not have the money that is being asked from us, they really need to make football affordable for everyone, even people on minimum wage.

Never going to happen.

Why?

Financial Fair Play.

Working well that isn't it, people like turdinand and Scholes are all right they live in a bubble and will never have to pay to get into a game, i bet Wio has never had to save for four season tickets has he, not got a fucking clue about the average fan in the street, just cheep shots about City fans, I fucking hate Rio Ferdinand, he has never got over the many times over the last few years that City absolutely hammered them with him in the United back four.

we can bang on about scholes this scholes that, but we need to look at ourselves here

it was not good all round

It was shit without a doubt but the c**t started with the hatchet job before a ball was fucking kicked claiming that the swamp would be full 10 hours before kick off on a magical European night and Chiles telling the world we are still a team of mercenaries.

The coverage is a disgrace regardless of how we perform or the result.

to be honest i couldn't give a shite what he says but the cold hard facts are we were poor on and off the field

I get that mate but it's a thread about the coverage we received last night.

Performance average, atmosphere average but just like many times over recent seasons ALL to play for. We didn't lose and we're still in the competition we just have to actually believe that we can beat these teams. I hate the thought of us needing someone with a megaphone getting the crowd going but there is nothing worse than having a comparatively small section of away fans singing and chanting for several minutes only to reply with a meek rendition of 'Blue Moon'........
Slightly worrying is that our owners obviously want to be Champions of Europe and are gearing the club up to be a European power house so I Just hope and pray that they don't see a below capacity crowd and maybe a little bit of apathy and/or negativity towards the competition and start asking 'Well, if the fans don't really want it why should we?'
Still, everything to play for........COME ON CITY !!

Good point

I've got my own opinions on the crowd numbers and atmosphere and I feel it should be better for these types of games but we don't need Paul Scholes of all people to tell us what we already know.

Besides, before he goes on about magical European nights at the Swamp (yet in most of their group games down the years they get outsung by the opposition fans just like we do), someone should ask him how many United got for their first ever home CL group game against Gothenburg in 1994, how much it was below their capacity at the time, and how much lower it was than our attendance last night.

fair enough, just needed to get it off my chest
but i don't know what you would of expected, yes why was he chosen to commentate, but as has been discussed ad infinatum we know why
but we don't help ourselves by providing the ammo laid out in front of him

do you really think so? i don't mate
i don't know what the fans who stay away reasons are for not going
and before anyone gets on their high horse
kids to feed, 400 mile round trip etc its not you
its the feet up beer, curry, or pub rather than getting down to the stadium to support the lads
would love to hear those reasons
a rocking stadium could of made the difference[/quote

Everybody has a different reason, some city fans on this very forum we're saying that they would not attend champs league nights due to what has happened over FFP. My reason is basically financial as is a lot of other working class fans,
People should not preach.

i'm not preaching and if you read my post instead of jumping in i said its not those of financial or large distances i was asking of
i myself made a call over sheff wed or roma due to finances and being working class
but there will be those who just couldn't be arsed

If your not preaching then I apologise, I went to the Sheffield Wednesday match with my three lads because it was affordable.

How does anything that Scholes or anybody else for that matter says alter the fact that we're clueless when it comes to CL football. I just think that we are ultimately hyper sensitive to anyone who is a rag or any kind of criticism of the club. Just because it's a rag saying it, or the possibiity that he is enjoying the situation, shouldn't make criticism any less valid as long as what he is saying is correct. He didn't say anything worse than any number of posters on here have probably said.

We are blues we have the right to criticise but some rag arse **** does not have the right to have a pop, sick to death of fukin rag cunts on City games

If we don't fill the stadium for whatever reasons then it's up to the owners to try and make it happen.

I see lots of seats that are normally taken up by adults who bring children with different people in them.

If you normally come with say a 16/17 year old then you are talking £60 before you add travel and other cost.

SOME people can not afford it, they have season tickets because it saves them money.

I expect about 80% of people in the NW get their wages and it's virtually all accounted for.
