It’s certainly an odd system, though there are others that are even more bewildering. In the Netherland, for example, the playoff system in the second division takes some fathoming. The top two go up automatically, but then the team that finished 16th in the top flight is involved in what is called the Nacompetitie with six other clubs.
- The club with the best record in the "first period" of the season (after 8 rounds).
- The club with the best record in the "second period" of the season (rounds 9–16).
- The club with the best record in the "third period" of the season (rounds 17–24).
- The club with the best record in the "fourth period" of the season (rounds 25–32).
- The two remaining spots are filled by the highest-placed clubs that have not already earned automatic promotion or qualified for the Nacompetitie.
That means you could get off to a blistering start in the first eight games, drop like a stone, narrowly avoid relegation, and yet still find yourself in the promotion playoffs!
In Scotland, when they continue to broadcast meaningless fixtures, then that simply reinforces the idea to the ‘watching world’ that the League is meaningless unless you support either of the Old Firm.
