Scottish independence

20% of Europe's fish
 25% of Europe's tidal potential.
The Crown Estate, which owns the sea bed, has awarded leases for just over 1.6 gigawatts of marine projects in the Pentland Firth and Orkney Waters - potentially enough to power 750,000 households.
Scotland boasts 25% of Europe's offshore wind resources.
60% of Europe's oil reserves.

Really? Would Europe vote against scotland? They voted in Croatia in 2013 and they can't offer any of this?
Errr- the crown estate?
That would be property owned by the sovereign of the UNITED KINGDOM!
Yes vote = no United Kingdom
Would the sea bed be nationalised by a Scottish government?

While previously stating I was unimpressed by Irishman Bob Geldof, domiciled in Kent, voting No if he had a vote.

I am somewhat surprised but also impressed that Billy Bragg has taken the opposite view. His take is that Scotland can be an example of how a post imperial country can redefine itself.
Billy Bragg ? Billy fuckin Bragg ? Fuck me that's about as useful as Joe Pasquale lending his voice to the no clan

Good honest socialist is Billy. Don't know your politics du Bois but just mentioning Joe Pasquale has made me ill.

Spain has already said it will vehemently oppose Scotlands entry into Europe.

Not exactly impartial are they? Catalunia and the Basque country. Spain's determination to hang on to these places meant they still haven't recognized Kosovo, which seceded from Serbia.

It doesn't matter whether they are impartial or not. They are still a member or the EU and they will still oppose any attempt by an independent Scotland to join the EU.

Indeed. And bigging up the wind potential of offshore Scotland. Not if it's within crown estate territory.

See this is the problem, all the yes voters thinking they can give the V's and yet keep the status quo.

Vote yes and expect the rug to be very quickly pulled from under your feet

Again, I've not heard a "compelling" argument from anyone to say Scotland should vote No. I've read a lot of speculation, theorising and such about what "may" happen rather than what "will" happen. In the meantime, the No vote has let the Yes chaps off the hook by not engaging them properly and demonstrating the (if any) paucity of argument.

Now, I'm an uneducated oik and I understand the currency thing, but I'd be amazed if the IMF (or whatever exists now to replace it) wouldn't assist a fledgling nation. I'd also be amazed if those existing trade relationships - generalising of course - didn't remain.

I can see the trouble ahead of RBS et al relocating, but ultimately they will not be turning away Scottish business/customers etc surely? Again, I understand the implications in terms of job losses etc but business will not be turned away.

In terms of the EU, ok Spain are anti-secessionist, and whilst influential (albeit due to self interest vis Catalonia), they are one voice in the EU. I've read (and it may well be inaccurate) that the a significant number of countries might not be so inclined.

Finally, in this very generalised view, having skim read the Deutsche Bank report, even that contains a lot of speculation rather than actual fact.

In conclusion, to me personally, I don't care if they say "yes' or they say "no" as I have no idea how either WILL affect me rather than the speculation rife from either camp. All I hope is whatever choice they make, they make in good faith and forge a new and bright future for all in their country.

Don't say that, some on here think Gretna is this side of the border!

Did I ever tell you I walked home from Maryhill back to the Merchant City one night? I came out of Framptons and turned left instead of right. Finished up about 8 miles out the city centre up a hill near a farm. A milk float give me a lift home. I knew then I needed to stop drinking.
