Scottish Independence

I think it’s fair Scotland get their referendum now we are effectively out of Europe.

Would they be allowed back in? If so their contributions may have to increase possibly making it financially impractical to rejoin. The EU could make big demands on Scotland’s agricultural finances.

Would they pay for the defence services and as there are Nuclear bases in Scotland what would happen to them? Sturgeon is opposed to Nuclear defence and has said she would never “press the button”. I guess she would would rely on her big brother the UK to protect the country, at what cost? The removal of Nuclear facilities can take years to complete, the Nuclear reactor plant at Dounreay is currently being decommissioned at a cost of around £4b but won’t be a brownfield site until around 2300, who pays for that?

I think she will be Scotland’s first PM but will not last more than one term, however long that may be.

I know I had a lie in today but when did we effectively become out of Europe?

We are effectively, the currencies have reacted, business’ will start planning for life out of Europe. Will take a few months but it’s set in stone now, if you think anything else you are kidding yourself.

Im a great believer in self determination with the last ref and the new one(as long as it’s post brexit) the good people of Scotland will have as much info as they are ever likely to get. They then can make their choIce. If they decide to leave I hope it’s a great success for them. If we never changed direction because we never knew exactly where it led nothing would ever change.

The only scenario where I think we should block it would be if they didn’t pay the divorce bill. I heard one SNP bloke say it’s a U.K. debt not a Scottish one. I hope he isn’t indicating what I think he is.

Again, entirely fair. from what i have heard, that was only said in the context of the currency debate. I'm all for Scotland paying it's share of the debt. But 'we' get to use the pound we've helped build over 300 years, till we can transition to whatever next. If not, then the accrued debt stays with th uk along with the currency.

The 'share of the debt' will be one tough negotiation and will get pretty fractious. Both sides are starting from very different places. It will be like a messy divorce where a husband runs up gambling debts and then asks his poor little wife to pay half ;-).

Not kidding myself it will get done eventually but how it looks no one knows, if I was Scottish I would very much like to see how it pans out before I took the plunge.

Sturgeon is jumping at brexit and Tory majority and I can see why the timing for her is right but it might not be for Scottish people.

A possible huge sticking point that one fella. Let’s hope it never happens.

Yes. out of the savings that he too has paid into.

Agree though, and both starting positions are understandable.

Maybe, some would wait. Many i know feel they don't need to wait, the direction is enough not to want to go there to chance what is at the other end.

The timing is hers (as FM) and the people's to decide, and as she is elected, she speaks for the people.

I think the timing is hers to try doesn't mean she will get it though. We could get a pretty lame brexit and the election was a one off freak.

Looking at it from a Scottish point of view voting for independence now could mean the absolute worse case scenario for the Scots.

I wouldn't want that. She has a responsibility above her ideology.

Michael Gove on Sophy Ridge said there will be no referendum, none, zilch, one reason he gave was that we've just seen what
happens when referendums are ignored, and they had one in 2014, which is a very good point, as it was, (where have we
heard this before), 'A once in a generation vote'.
So tough luck Nic, it ain't happening.
