I think capacity was limited to around 40k for the Brightwell derby to be fair after all the trouble when we slapped them 5-1 earlier that season. No such excuse for that attendance against Torpedo Moscow though. Also, the season before that they won the UEFA Super Cup at Old Trafford against Red Star Belgrade and the attendance was a whopping 22,110!They got 40k for a league the derby in 1990. I never used to notice at all but now I even find myself noticing on old footage from games I have watched previously of city, from say 2005, which I swear I didn't notice or pay attention to at the time...its daft but them internet nutters have managed to get in my head and make me start noticing even though it doesn't matter"We'll be the laughing stock of English football if we don't sell out" says the Coventry fan.
It's madness how the number of empty seats has been elevated on the internet to almost the status of points lost or goals conceded. Nobody gave a fuck until a few years ago. It's obvious that a club like Coventry won't have the demand as a Man United obecaue they don't have generations of glory hunters attaching themselvesd to the club.
I swear nobody cared about whether a club sold out their stadium or not even 20 years ago. Fans doing need congratulating because there happen to be a lot of them. It's easy to support a big succesful club, If any football fans deserve any kind of cogratulations it's 100 Morecombe fans travelling to Exeter on a Wednesday.
The internet and the rise of the armchair glory hunting Sky TV "fan" is behind this. Ironically I think they are the ones doing the infantile attendence measuring.
Coventry City. The clubs knobhead fans were spouting shite about having a better fanbase than us after selling out their allocation for the John Smiths trophy(or whatever it was called that season) whilst we were struggling(if you'd of believed the gutter press) to sell out our League cup final v Chelsea. We sold out, but it didn't stop knobhead fans of a club that has never had a higher average attendance than us any season in their history spouting they had more supporters. So I'm very surprised this gigantic colossus of a club haven't sold out.. maybe it's because of the unglamorous opponents:)Yeah, they should do. However, having a look on their forum there are plenty of complaints about the sales process. Apparently a lot of ST holders have bought match tickets for friends and family in the past but many of those people they bought for don't have an account, let alone a purchase history, so will be excluded when it goes to all fans with a purchase history. I also note that they've got similar complaints to what we've had in the past about gaps between sales windows. Coventry only have 3 sales windows for this match currently - ST holders, then members with 50 loyalty points, then members with a purchase history. There's a full week between each sales window which is daft. Also, some fans are confused as to what constitutes a purchase history - some think that buying something from the souvenir shop qualifies! Yet surely it's ticket purchases. The feeling amongst some Coventry fans is that it will sell out one way or another but they'll probably have to let ST holders buy extra. Obviously they can't just put it on open sale as the local Rags will snap them up:
Fa cup tickets
So do you need a purchase history this Thursday? Some seem to think you do. They probably think you do because that’s what the club announced!www.skybluestalk.co.uk

That Brightwell derby I was outside and there were hundred of mainly blues looking for tickets and the touts had none. I can't remember what the restrictions on selling them were but you're dead right. I remember another similar derby at out place which wasn't full - the 1-1 McCarthy one. Similar situations - big restrictions on advance ticket sales.I think capacity was limited to around 40k for the Brightwell derby to be fair after all the trouble when we slapped them 5-1 earlier that season. I wonder if we hear the same in other countries or it's a peculiarly English thing?."We'll be the laughing stock of English football if we don't sell out" says the Coventry fan.

I think the capacity at Old Trafford then was around 48,000 at the time, their highest gate that season was just over 47,000 for the opener against Arsenal when Michael Knighton was doing his keepy-uppies. I was in the main stand paddock closest to the City fans and i remember plenty of space in the open bit between the Stretford End and the United Road and at the bottom of all of the terraces, not sure if it was due to apathy or restrictions if i'm being honest.Capacity for the Brightwell Derby was 58k
it was definitely restrictions.
