Sebastián Coates

Can you describe what he can do exactly? Is he more than just a guy who's good in the air as well as defending?

I'll tell you a cool story about Sebastian that many don't know about.
When Seba (short for Sebastian) was growing up, he played as a defensive midfielder for Nacional's youth team. His performance wasn't that bright and he was about to be cut lose (¿loose? - Haven't spoken much English the last few years) and the P.E. coach recommended him to try playing as a CB... He was doubtful at first, but he wanted to make it to the A team so he started playing there, and as everybody knows now the results were great.
Seba has great airplay (he should have scored against Paraguay, but his header was stopped by some opponent's hand (<a class="postlink" href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sm1WyKjl-Es&feature=related" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sm1WyKjl ... re=related</a> 00.37) in both attack and defense; we all know that.
Things to point out: He has great personality, he is a leader inside the field, and isn't temperative; thing that also helps. He is humble and pretty smart, thing one can notice by watching him play. He also has decent ball handling ability instead of being the regular flipper cb. Seba is only 20 yo and has around 15 international games with Nacional, and has been called to defend the NT for the first time in 2009 before the WC.

That's it for today, have a nice weekend :)

Thanks. That's sold it for me. The complete opposite of a MAncini center back. I'm no longer disappointed we didn't get him. Lescott encapsulates the 'classic English' mould of a center back and Coates perfects it (allegedly). Savic is what we need (allegedly). Savic summarises the more 'universal' italian approach.

Edited words in bold

What? Coates is a better version of Savic it seems. And Mancini did not buy Lescott. So how is Lescott the classic mould of a CB Mancini wants?

Oh sorry, my typos give way once more. Lescott is the encapsulation of an English Center Back. I'm going on what I've been told by Fabian Z. It's apparent that Coates lacks the technicality exuded by Kompany and, allegedly, Savic. It seems that he's the extremity of the spectrum on which Lescott exists. If you get my drift.

After he turned them down initially, Dnipro in Ukraine have doubled their wage offer to Coates to join them. Coates prefers to go to a club like us or one of the other top sides trailing him but may have to join Dnipro as they have a very strong interest and are persisting. I know we have a lot of defenders but I reckon this lad has the talent to be one of the best in the world, so I hope our interest remains.

Why has everyone forgotten about Savic :(. Feel sorry for the guy.

Well, I haven't forgotten about Savic, it is Boyata I'd be more concerned for but feel he might yet convert to a right-back so he could play two positions.

What part of what Fabian said gave you that impression?<br /><br />-- Fri Aug 12, 2011 8:04 pm --<br /><br />

Practically all marauding center backs are capable of fulfilling a defensive midfield position or even midfield position or full back.

He isn't going there since not the player nor his family wants him to play in Ukraine, despite the amazing contract he was offered. Still no formal offers and he might end up in Lazio.
