Sergio Aguero - 2019/20 Performances

But it's the games against the likes of Chelsea, Liverpool, Spurs etc where we've really been shown up this season and those losses aren't right to pin on Aguero.

His record against the top 6 has been phenomenal since he joined us but this season he's struggled to reach those heights, like the majority of the team.

Spurs are pathetic this season. We had about 50 attempts in both league games and scored just 2 goals. Liverpool away Sergio let the team down, you expect from him to make a difference and he did feck all despite having chances to score/assist.

I'm probably harsh and only because a lot of posters are completely blind about Sergio's shortcomings this season just because he scored many goals against rubbish teams. He hasn't made any difference in any big game this season so far. If he doesn't show improvement against Leicester away, I wouldn't start him against Madrid. You need players who are at the top of their game right now, not players with exceptional careers who are not performing at their best this season.

Tbf, it's easy to have a blind spot about Sergio because he's been exceptional for City and an absolute legend.

But this season, unlike last season, he isn't performing well in more difficult games, he doesn't make a difference. Even in home games where he scores and is the hero, say Southamton and Palace, his all round game wasn't good at all and he was anonymous for the majority of the games. We create tons of chances against teams like those and scoring in such games would be easy for most good strikers on the planer. Sergio is great not because of his record against bottom half teams but because of his record against the very best. We need that Sergio in the CL.

You definitely make some valid points but, when I put it in the context of your defence of other players and the manager, it just comes across as you laying a disproportionate amount of blame at Aguero's feet.

I don't blame Aguero or pep for playing him. It's only natural to play Aguero given what he has done for the club, including last season. But things change, players lose from their ability or for some reason don't perform as well as before that. The manager isn't a god and can't know whether the player will regain form or is just aging. So, he gives the player every chance to improve on his performances, especially if he is a legend. It's a tricky situation. If you bench Sergio prematurely, you might lose a top performer in the big games and the group dynamics might be bad because the legend has a lot of influence after all. If you keep giving him chances and he doesn't improve, then you might risk to seriously piss off younger players, apart from losing games. It's quite tricky indeed.

I'm a bit harsh because a lot of fans are giving Gabby a hard time despite his good performances. Imagine if Pep played Gabby in all those games we lost with Sergio in the starting XI. Pep would be crucified on here for having lost it, being stubborn, etc. Fans would be absolutely convinced that we'd have done much better with Sergio...Reality is we lost every 3rd game Sergio started this season. That's shockingly bad for a Pep team: 6 losses from 19 games.

If you're trying to pin that record as being on Aguero you need to have a lie down.

I'm pointing out the blind spot many blues have about Aguero because of which they elevate him above any criticism and are convinced we are doing better with him than without him. It's getting pathetic since a lot more fans are questioning the manager but never Aguero. They would do better to question the manager why he keeps picking Aguero in difficult games away from home when his record in such games for years now has been underwhelming. In my book, Pep's best decision this season was to bench Aguero at Man U where we had our best away performance all season and could have easily scored 5.

Since the start of the 17/18 season Aguero hasn't scored a single goal in away games against Liverpool, Man U, Chelsea, Arsenal and Spurs. Hasn't done much better in CL games at the ground of good teams either. That's a pretty bad record if we are being honest here. Yet most fans find the idea to not start Sergio in Madrid ludicrous. Why? Because they are completely unaware of his poor record away from home, that's why.

In terms of home games Sergio is still top 3 in the league. Away from home he is just another good striker. Fans are mixing up his home and away form and don't realise the significant discrepancy between them.

I make that 13 PL games with Rags and Chelsea to come this season. In fairness you should really point out that Aguero didn't feature at all in five of those matches and three of those that he started in were at Anfield where all our players seem to turn to shit. Of the remaining five that Aguero started Spurs last Sunday was the first one we didn't win.
